4. Postdoctoral Research Associate

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We have recently proposed and validated a new concept – Integrated CO2 Absorption and Mineralization (IAM). The IAM technology can potentially combine carbon capture from industries and the ambient air with mineralisation into one short, efficient, thus low-cost process, turning CO2 and solid wastes to carbonates, valuable construction materials and locking away CO2 permanently. This project represents outstanding opportunities for the CERC Fellow to gain a fundamental understanding of the new process and through science and engineering innovation and further to advance the new technology which has the potential to contribute significantly to a circular economy nationally and internationally. The CERC Fellow’s research strongly aligns with a range of strategic priorities for CSIRO Energy, the Permanent Carbon Locking Future Science Platform and the Towards Net Zero Mission. These include industrial decarbonisation, environmental performance, and technologies supporting a circular economy. The CERC Fellow will lead the project, explore research opportunities, apply for additional funding, engage customers and supervise students. This will help establish the Fellow as a highly independent leader who will build global scientific and business network by working at CSIRO Newcastle and Clayton.

8. Postdoctoral Research Associate

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system. Human behaviour, at the individual and collective levels, plays a crucial role in disease transmission. This has recently been demonstrated as vaccine uptake (or hesitancy), mask wearing, and physical distancing have all had significant impacts on the spread of SARS-CoV-2. An improved understanding of these behaviours, and their interactions with disease dynamics, is therefore necessary to support more realistic models to guide public health decision-making.

9. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Recycling of polymers is of concern from an environmental, social and economic standpoint. Thermoset based coatings, composites and adhesives are used for applications which require advanced mechanical, thermal and chemical properties. The permanent covalent bonds in cross-linked thermoset polymers prevents them from being reprocessed in the melt state and consequently they are not easily recyclable. This postdoctoral research project will redesign thermosets to comprise with recyclable or recoverable bonds, to redesign tomorrow’s plastics to be ‘recyclable-by-design’.

11. Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Coral reefs around the world including the Great Barrier Reef are under the threat of severe coral bleaching and ocean acidification from the impacts of climate change. Conserving reefs into the future will require an understanding of the evolving distribution of climate refugia that currently protects reefs. This will depend on how reef-scale circulation and reef connectivity change with climate conditions. However, the current generation of climate models are unable to resolve critical reef-scale physical processes. The Fellow will address this critical need using machine learning approaches to rapidly downscale climate model outputs. The research will be supported by a team with expertise in ocean modelling and downscaling, machine learning, and ecological impact assessment. The Fellow will be able to exploit existing data, models and software to extend machine learning approaches for the purpose of downscaling climate models. Resulting high-resolution ocean projections will be used to estimate the future state of the Great Barrier Reef and guide conservation strategies. Combining climate knowledge with new machine learning methods will place the Fellow at the forefront of this important research area.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Wetlands perform critical ecosystem functions such as freshwater storage, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity habitat. However, urban wetlands are often polluted by metals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and other commonly used anthropogenic contaminants. Despite a growing body of research highlighting the extent of wetland pollution, little is known about the toxicological impacts of metals and polyfluoroalkyl substances on higher-order terrestrial biota, such as frogs. To address this research gap, we are looking for a CERC Postdoctoral Fellow with experience in vertebrate ecotoxicology, herpetofauna biology, collection and tissue sampling, toxicological data analysis and interpretation (including bioinformatics), and managing multi-disciplinary datasets. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work across multiple CSIRO laboratories, in addition to working at collaborator institutions (national and international). This will ensure you have access to state-of-the-art high throughput technologies and bioinformatics techniques in the field of systems biology and environmental omics.
