Marginal ice zone (MIZ) is the transition from ice-free ocean to the pack ice, characterized by ice-ocean dynamics and discrete ice floes. In MIZ, waves have an effect on sea ice and sea ice effects the waves. We can assume that with global warming the MIZs of the oceans will grow in size, because the thinner ice of the future will break more easily than the thicker ice of yesterday. If earlier either thick ice or high waves were challenging for ships and offshore windfarms, we now need to consider also the situation where ice and waves occur at the same time. 3. Fully Funded PhD Position in radio astronomy

Summary of PhD Program:

The research concentrates on the physics of relativistic jets launched from accreting supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN). These black hole powered jets are among the most energetic long-lived phenomena in the Universe and despite their ubiquity, many of the fundamental questions regarding their physics are still open. We do not for example understand well their launching and acceleration mechanisms. With its sub-milliarcsecond resolution, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) with radio telescopes is the only observational method that allows us to image the jet formation region. The most remarkable example of the power of this technique are the recent images by the Event Horizon Telescope.

Statistical inference of simulator-based models used in many domains of science and engineering is challenging due to the unavailability of the likelihood function, which is the probability density function of the data given the parameters. To solve this problem, the field of simulation-based inference (SBI) has emerged, wherein large numbers of simulations from the model are utilised for inference instead of the likelihood function.
