1. Understanding carbon sequestration in porous media: sustainable CO2 storage
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The consequences of increased CO2 levels in the atmosphere leading to global climate change present a clear challenge to the industrial and academic research communities. An exciting potential solution is carbon capture and storage (CCS). After capturing CO2 at its source, it must then be stored (sequestered) in a long term and stable environment. One such method involves the storage of CO2 at supercritical conditions (SC) in bedrock formations and depleted natural gas reservoirs. It is imperative for the long term viability and safety of such sequestration that the underlying chemistry and physics of the interactions between SC-CO2 and the formations they reside in are thoroughly characterised and understood. The aims of this project will be to use the non-invasive technique of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study the behaviour of SC-CO2 in a variety of model porous systems under realistic conditions. Magnetic resonance provides incredibly rich and diverse data that delivers unparalleled information for both physical and chemical processes via non-invasive, chemically specific measurements of mass transport and molecular properties.

2. Senior Clinical Training Scholarship (SCTS) in Small Animal Medicine
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The Senior Clinical Training Scholarship in Small Animal Medicine is available, to start on 1 December 2022. The training programme covers all aspects of small animal medicine, including cardiology, oncology, medical neurology, diagnostic imaging and clinical pathology, and is approved by the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. The Scholar will be required to register for the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. The training programme requires participation in the Department’s clinical service, including the out-of-hours rota and first opinion practice, in addition to small-group teaching of veterinary students. An applicant must be a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, or hold a veterinary degree qualifying her/him for membership. Completion of an appropriate internship or a minimum of two years’ experience in small animal practice is essential.

3. PhD studentship on NLP Approaches to Mental Health Research
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Mental health conditions are some of the most debilitating health conditions, and one of the main causes of the overall disease burden worldwide (Vos et al, 2013). In England, it is estimated that 1 in 6 people in the past week experienced a mental health problem (McManus et al, 2016). Recent research suggests that NLP markers of transcribed speech might be powerful predictors of individual disease trajectories for patients with early stage psychotic disorders (Corcoran et al 2018, Mota et al 2018, Morgan et al 2021). A number of questions remain however, including whether similar approaches can be used to predict relapse for patients tapering off medication and how best to design algorithms that are explainable and combine relevant features of speech. There are also exciting opportunities to use NLP measures to study recovery stories from people with lived experience of mental health conditions, to understand how people tell their stories and the ways in which sharing recovery stories might help others with ongoing mental health conditions.

4. PhD Studentship in Systems Engineering and Machine Learning

Applications are invited for a fully funded non-clinical PhD awarded to the University of Cambridge to be led by Dr Michael Roberts at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and Dr Nick Gleadall at the Department of Haematology as part of the Haematology Data Science Initiative (BloodCounts! And Haem-Match). The successful applicant will spend time at the both DAMTP and Department of Haematology at The University of Cambridge, and will be fully embedded into all teams to ensure the necessary complementary skillsets are developed during the PhD. The purpose of the role is to develop the software and systems required to prototype the BloodCounts! system for pandemic surveillance along with the Haem-match system for the computerised matching of units of donated blood to patients prescribed transfusion treatment. When these systems are adopted by blood services, they will reduce the harm currently caused by the mismatching of patient and donor blood types, which can cause frequently transfused patients to become untransfusable.

5. PhD studentship – Decarbonisation of Heating
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The project will explore some of the challenges associated with the decarbonisation of heating through use of a combination of approaches of energy efficiency and use of renewable heat generation systems, with particular reference to challenging buildings such as in Cambridge Colleges, and with a view to establishing some general principles through modelling and data collection and analysis. 6. Next generation NMR techniques for decoupling flow & diffusion in porous media
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The aim of this project is to develop a range of magnetic resonance techniques which have the potential to separate advective and diffusion mass transport for slow fluid flows (1~10 µm s-1). A number of approaches will be adopted including new experimental methods, non-linear acquisition strategies and novel data processing. The range of experimental approaches will include methods to prolong the lifetime of the NMR signal, such as by magnetic dilution and/or isotopic substitution, and reducing the molecular self-diffusion of the species of interest. These experimental approaches will be combined with the non-linear acquisition and processing strategies. Once optimal methods have been developed and assessed, they will be incorporated into spatially resolved measurements using sensing techniques developed within the group.

11. Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation PhD studentship
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Abdominal pain has a profound effect on the quality of life experienced by patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). As part of a research consortium funded by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, to investigate the mechanistic endotypes driving chronic pain in IBD, we are pleased to offer a 3-year PhD studentship evaluating the contribution of cytokine signalling to visceral nociception in IBD. This studentship will be based at the Department of Pharmacology, University of Cambridge, and will work closely with fellow consortium members based at QMUL (Prof Qasim Aziz), INSERM Toulouse (Prof Nathalie Vergnolle) and Sorbonne University (Prof Harry Sokol). This PhD builds on a body of work from the Bulmer lab performed in collaboration with fellow consortium members which has utilised human tissue to identify new drug targets for pain in gastrointestinal disease and neuroimmune interactions (Hockley et al, (2014) PAIN 155 (10): 1962-1975; McGuire et al (2018) Gut. 67(1):86-96; Bautzova et al (2018) Sci Signal. 11(561); Barker et al (2022) BioRxiv). This studentship will explore cytokine mediated pain signalling utilising ex-vivo electrophysiological recording and calcium imaging from mouse and human nociceptors in combination with tissue samples from IBD patients characterised into mechanistic pain endotypes by clinical, pathological, and omics profiling performed within the consortium.
