Professors Robin Turner and James Piret invite applications for a full-time post-doctoral fellowship position available in the field of bioanalytical Raman microspectroscopy and Raman chemical imaging. We seek a highly qualified individual with a doctoral degree in chemistry or physics or engineering with an interest in developing process analytical technologies for cell therapy bioprocess applications. Essential qualifications include experience measuring and analyzing Raman spectra of live or fixed cultured cells using a commercial Raman microspectroscopy instrument and common multivariate chemometric methods (e.g., principal component analysis). Experience with MATLAB and LabVIEW software applications would be an asset. For over 20 years our group has been investigating and develop novel Raman spectroscopy methods to probe the status of stem cells, Chinese hamster ovary and other cultured cell lines, as well as T-cells and red blood cells). For the manufacturing of therapeutic proteins, Raman spectroscopy is already being used for industrial manufacturing on-line analysis of glucose, lactate and CHO cell concentrations, whereas we are developing this technology as a process analytical technology for the production of cells for therapy.

3. Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Foster Lab, Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will collaborate very closely with another Postdoctoral Research Fellow based at Simon Fraser University for the project “Identification of the target sites of a new acaricide against the honey bee parasite, Varroa destructor”. The successful candidate will perform proteomic analyses and will also perform bioinformatic analyses and compile short-lists of potential target proteins. Thus, knowledge of proteomics and bioinformatics is necessary for this position. Candidates require a Ph.D. in either biochemistry, bio-organic chemistry, molecular biology or protein biophysics, obtained within the past five years. Abilities to work with small-molecule probes, protein extracts (of soluble and/or membrane-bound proteins) and protein purification/proteolysis systems are essential. One full-time postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Dr. Joanne Matsubara, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine UBC. The research project addresses the overarching challenge of understanding and characterizing molecular and cellular events associated with the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is a complex, multifactorial disease in which chronic, low-grade inflammation is thought to play a critical role in disease pathogenesis. While treatments exist for the exudative (wet) form of AMD, there are no treatments for the non-exudative (dry) form but many clinical trials are in progress. Animal models, cell culture methods and human tissue samples will be used in the research studies. UBC is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral fellowship in responsible sourcing and digital traceability in in mining supply chains. UBC is building a research program in this area, through a collaboration between the Bradshaw Research Initiative in Minerals and Mining (BRIMM), Blockchain@UBC, and the Sauder School of Business. This program has several industrial and public sector collaborations, including mining companies, buyers of mining commodities, blockchain technology developers, NGOs and governments. The most notable initiative that UBC is involved with is the Digital Trust program in resources led by IBM and the Province of British Columbia. Specifically, the research will focus on the governance of the multi-organization ecosystems that will be necessary to achieve digitally-enabled supply chain transparency in the mining industry.
