2. Postdoctoral Research Associate
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
A position is open for a Postdoc Research Associate in Control of meiotic recombination in Arabidopsis, in the Henderson Group in the Department of Plant Sciences. Meiotic recombination is a major mechanism that creates genetic diversity in plants and animals and remains a vital tool during crop breeding. This project will explore molecular mechanisms that control the number and distribution of recombination events (crossovers) genome-wide in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. We have identified recombination factors (e.g. HEI10) and epigenetic marks (e.g. DNA methylation) that regulate crossover formation in plants (Ziolkowski et al; Yelina et al). In this project, the successful candidate will use molecular genetics and genomics approaches to further understand the control of recombination patterns in the Arabidopsis genome. We have recently used long-read DNA sequencing to complete assembly of the Arabidopsis centromeres (Naish et al). The candidate will explore new ways of using long-read sequencing to study recombination.

Applications are invited for an experienced and motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate interested in studying various mutually exclusive partner mutations in H3K27M and H3.3G34R gliomas, a type of lethal and incurable brain tumour in children. The aim of this project is to uncover how these different mutations modify interactions between brain tumour cells and their microenvironment (blood vessels, microglia, neurons, astrocytes and infiltrating immune cells). The role will involve a substantial amount of in vivo work so prior expertise in using mouse models¿ in either cancer research or neurobiology research, is essential. In addition, expertise in techniques like FACS/flow cytometry, single-cell genomics and epigenomics, mass cytometry, CyTOF and/or proteomics is highly desirable. These techniques will be important for investigating tumour samples of various genotypes composed of heterogeneous populations of cells, with the aim of deconvolving differences in cell type composition and cell state.

The University of Cambridge wishes to appoint a postdoctoral scientist to join Dr Michal Minczuk’s research group in the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit in Cambridge. The postholder will work within a programme focussed on mitochondrial genome editing to study the mitochondrial ribosome. Expression of human mitochondrial DNA is indispensable for proper function of the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) machinery. Defects in these processes often cause tissue-specific deficiency of one or more OXPHOS complexes leading to mitochondrial diseases. The mammalian mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome) is specialised for the translation of the 13 mitochondria-encoded components of the OXPHOS system. Recent high-resolution structures obtained via cryo-electron microscopy have rapidly advanced our understanding of the adaptations of the mitochondrial ribosome.
