7. Doctoral position on the evolution of the AI business ecosystem
Summary of Doctoral Project:
We build on the tradition of research that looks at technologies as large socio-technical systems of interconnected components, whose evolution depends on both deliberate choice and emergent properties. The project will look at the interplay of the different technical, business and social components of the AI ecosystem to identify bottlenecks, incentives, opportunities for growth and frictions that prevent implementation. In so doing, the project intends to be very mindful of the social implications of digital technologies: the rise of new technologies, at least in the short term, always generates costs and benefits, winners and losers. One of the overarching aims of the project is the identification of the technical bottlenecks (e.g. access to data, interoperability between Cloud and Edge technologies) which needs addressing, and the analysis of how different solutions to the same bottleneck might imply a different distribution of costs and benefits.

11. PhD position in Aerosol Microbiome Research
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Microbes perform functions essential for diverse ecosystem services and health. They impact key climatological processes such as cloud formation and precipitation in the atmosphere. Atmospheric transport is known to mediate the exchange of microorganisms within and between terrestrial and marine environments. However, airborne microbial communities remain the least studied microbiome on Earth, especially in remote areas such as the open oceans. Processes at the ocean-atmosphere interface are of particular importance, given that they underpin the distribution of airborne marine microbes, which may affect ecosystem structure and health even thousands of kilometres away from their source. To advance our understanding, it is thus essential to establish an inventory of airborne marine microbes and study the factors that shape their diversity, drive their emission, and project their dispersal across space.

15. PhD position in data and process analysis to enable the digitalized integrated planning of interventions on road sections comprised of assets of multiple types
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The future of national roads is one where both human driven and automated vehicles travel seamlessly from their origins to their destinations. Potential disruptions to unhindered travel will be foreseen with the extensive use of surveillance technologies, and either prevented through the implementation of detailed action plans or their consequences eliminated with the seamless rerouting of vehicles along alternate routes to avoid traffic jams with as little as possible lost travel time. Interventions on the infrastructure, whether it be the filling of pavement cracks, or the rehabilitation of bridges, will be grouped together in ways that minimize traffic disruption, while maintaining costs as low as possible. A new ETH project “MINERVA”, co-funded by the Swiss Federal Road Authority, will develop tools to help enable the realization of the latter part of this future. It will include the development of a new process to enable the integrated planning of maintenance interventions on road sections that are comprised of assets of different types. The process will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the process through the optimal exploitation of digital tools.
