1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cyclic peptide discovery for intracellular protein targets
Summary of PhD Program:
One of the major challenges in peptide therapeutics discovery for intracellular targets lies in achieving reliable cell penetration. Unlike Lipinski’s ‘rule of five’ which can guide small molecule drug design, there is currently no defined set of rules for developing peptide drugs. The aim of this project is to establish general rules for peptide cell permeability. Using a combination of chemical synthesis and biosynthetic approaches, cyclic peptide libraries with be generated and characterised to assess cell permeability.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Postdiagnosis Physical Activity and Hepatocellular Carcinoma Outcomes
Summary of PhD Program:
Primary liver cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer death worldwide. It is the fastest-growing cause of cancer death in England, with a 10-year survival rate of only 8%. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer. HCC occurs most often in people with chronic liver disease, such as cirrhosis caused by viral hepatitis, alcohol, or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).
Most patients present with advanced-stage HCC. The first-line treatment for these patients is systemic therapy. However, only patients with good physical fitness are candidates for systemic therapy, and even among those patients, only a minority (25-30%) benefit from it. Therefore, we need to find better treatment options for patients with advanced HCC.

Summary of PhD Program:
The North East of England has the highest number of farm tenancies in the UK. This PhD research will investigate the current situation of farm tenants, and the challenges they face as land use changes. It is anticipated that the research will involve interviewing farm tenants and estate owners, and possible comparison with tenant farmers in other parts of the UK. Additional interviews will involve people dealing with the legal framework of tenancies to gain knowledge of restrictive covenants and other legal matters linked to tenancies.

Summary of PhD Program:
Health economic models of treatments for people with cancer model survival over the lifetime of patients. These models usually incorporate three health states: progression-free (PF) cancer, post-progression (PP) cancer and death. In the absence of long-term data, this modelling requires the extrapolation of survival curves beyond the end of a clinical trial with relatively short follow-up periods. Two common economic model designs used are state transition models (STMs) and partitioned survival models (PSMs).

Summary of PhD Program:
This project will involve looking at abstract quantum foundational theory, with a view to applying it to physical situations to design demonstrations of foundational effects, and protocols to leverage these effects for some benefit. While this PhD is theoretical, it will involve close collaboration with our experimental partners at Bristol, Heriot-Watt, Northumbria, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Kagawa, and the UK National Quantum Computing Centre, who will hopefully undertake experiments you help design. Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD will involve in developing novel quantum digital signature protocols, and verifying the security of the protocols using a branch in computer science known as formal methods. The success of formal methods in classical computing – they are ubiquitous e.g. in software development – led to the development of quantum formal methods, which helps to describe and analyse systems that combine quantum and classical elements. Previous research in quantum formal techniques focused on analysing realistic quantum information processing systems, to gain an understanding of concurrent and communicating quantum systems, and importantly to support the future development of tools for verifying the correctness of more complex quantum technologies.

Summary of PhD Program:
Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), such as Secure Multi-party Computation (MPC) and Federated Learning (FL) allow parties to collaboratively analyze a collection of data partitions where each data partition is contributed by a different party (such as banks, or law enforcement agencies). Two facts about most PETs exist: (i) the output of PETs reveals some information about the parties’ private input sets (i.e., the computation result in FL or MPC), and (ii) various variants of PETs do not output the result to all parties, even in those PETs that do, not all of the parties are necessarily interested in it. Given these facts, a natural question arises: How can we incentivize parties that do not receive the result or do not express interest in it to participate in PETs?

Summary of PhD Program:
The cellular response to low oxygen levels (hypoxia), is crucial for cell survival and identity. At the cellular level, the transcriptional response is primarily orchestrated by the transcription factor Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (HIF). In low oxygen conditions, HIF is rapidly stabilised, initiating transcription of genes involved in processes such as metabolism and angiogenesis, to restore oxygen balance and promote cell survival. Hypoxia and HIF activation underpin many diseases like cancer and neurodegeneration, emphasising the need to understand HIF’s regulatory mechanisms.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in 3D-Printed Reactors for Shrinking Chemical Processes
Summary of PhD Program:
In this project, novel laboratory-scale continuous reactors will be designed and 3d-printed, and applied to a variety of real reactions from industry, currently performed in batch, to demonstrate “process intensification” and rapid, scalable process development/optimisation. Previous work in the area by the Process Intensification Group has demonstrated that many batch processes can be made significantly “greener” via this method of process development. One recent example is a 200-fold reduction in reactor size while removing an organic solvent altogether, whilst maintaining productivity and improving yield/selectivity etc.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Bioprocess Intensification for carbon dioxide and waste-derived feedstock conversion to bio-based products
Summary of PhD Program:
The candidate will first perform data analytics to map the composition of waste-derived feedstocks across domestic and global geographic regions. This will help us examine how seasonality (in particular weather conditions) might affect their fundamental characteristics and how waste streams will differ geographically. By understanding this, the candidate can then design, evolve and optimise highly characterised biocatalysts, microorganisms, and microbial consortia to convert waste-based feedstocks into new products. Finally, using CPI’s pilot plant facilities, the PhD student will have the opportunity to assess the scalability and usability of the processes/technologies that they have demonstrated in a laboratory environment, expanding on the breakthroughs and key learnings discovered.
