Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

A Research Associate position to research on Brain Cancer Immunotherapy is available for 12 months initially commencing in July 2024 (or soon after) to join a multidisciplinary and a highly collaborative team working on lipid nanoparticle-mediated co-delivery of immunogenic cell death chemotherapeutics and immune checkpoint blockade nucleic acids to treat brain cancer. Applicants will have the opportunity to contribute to other projects linked to brain research as opportunities arise.
Applicants should have a relevant PhD field and preferably post-doctorate experience in one of the following fields: pharmacy, drug delivery, cancer biology, immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, material/chemical science or any other relevant fields. Holding a Home Office (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 Licence or equivalent and experience in handling animals is highly desirable.

The Nott group is looking for a skilled and motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate with a strong background in structural biology, cell biology, or biophysics. The project will combine novel methods for studying membraneless organelles with structural strategies for characterising molecular conformations, interactions, and enzyme activity.

Applicants should hold (or be near completion of) a PhD in a relevant area of biological or physical science and have the ability to independently drive an interdisciplinary project. Expertise in structural, biophysical, or cellular methods are all advantageous. The research associate will join an early-stage translational medical research project, combining artificial intelligence (AI) and portable ultra-low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Specifically, the project aims to develop and analytically validate an AI tool for automatic triaging of portable ultra-low-field MRI brain scans of adult patients into “normal” and “abnormal” for the purposes of triage. The role will involve acquisition and analysis of MRI data, as well as development of AI models. The researcher appointed will focus on candidate phosphatases that have been validated to regulate actin dynamics during infection with the poxvirus Vaccinia. How do these phosphatases function, what are their key interactors, how do they recognise substrates, how do they impact signalling dynamics and outputs? The broader goal is to contextualise these findings in uninfected cells and, with the help of a collaborator, in other viral infections. The researcher appointed will take advantage of, and further develop, a Vaccinia virus-based signalling platform, as well as cutting-edge molecule counting and optogenetics tools available in the lab. Experience in phosphatase biology, microscopy, cell signalling or biochemistry is desirable but not mandatory.

A better understanding of the cellular and molecular basis for DQ6-conferred susceptibility could lead to novel disease prevention strategies including refinements to antigen-specific immunotherapy approaches or adoptive Treg cell therapies. The project will involve the use of i) iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and “engineered heart tissues (EHT)” and ii) experimental in vivo models of cardiac disease. We therefore seek to appoint an individual with a strong background in cell/molecular biology and experience of working with iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes or EHT. Previous experience with in vivo mouse models and in vivo phenotyping (e.g. high-resolution echocardiography) is desirable. The project will also offer experience in metabolomic assays, prior experience in this area is desirable but not essential. The postholder will be part of a vibrant multi-disciplinary research group working on several different aspects of cardiovascular pathophysiology, within the King’s BHF Centre of Research Excellence which has state-of-the-art laboratory facilities.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

In this project, funded by an internal MRC Impact Acceleration Award, we will use currently-collected patient imaging data to further develop computational pipelines to reconstruct personalised image-based computer models of a patient’s heart. Imaging data, from modalities such as Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT will be combined in order to best represent the patient’s cardiac anatomy, as well as the underlying fibrosis and scar tissue which are responsible for driving the lethal ventricular arrhythmias to be treated. These patient models will then be used within our novel in-silico approach (patent filed) to rapidly simulate patient arrhythmias in near-real time. A crucial aspect of this work will be the further adaptation of this computational approach in order to automatically account for the inherent uncertainty in the clinical data, for example by considering different representations of the scar or of the functional parameters that go into the model.
