Summary of Doctoral Project:

Under the supervision of Prof. Egger and Dr. Iskandar, the student will engage in method research, specifically, in the development of (1) a modeling framework that is amenable to various data sparsity situations and (2) a stochastic model to emulate the transmission dynamic of HIV and HPV and cervical (pre-)cancer progression. The method work will draw upon approaches from quantitative disciplines such as stochastic process, simulation modeling, and epidemiology. The student will also conduct cost-effectiveness analyses of different cervical cancer screening policies. In addition, the student is expected to liaise with project partners in Zambia, contribute to ongoing activities within IeDEA-SA, present work at international conferences and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals.

6. PhD student in Geological Sciences

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The institute of Geological Sciences of the University of Bern and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL invite talented, motivated and excellent candidates to apply for a fully funded PhD position where the PhD student will be embedded in an interdisciplinary project including hydrologists, political scientists and economists. We focus on heavily modified landscapes in pre-Alpine areas of Switzerland where mountain streams have been channelized and engineered with check dams. We aim at exploring more natural ways of managing such drainage basins. To achieve these goals, we need a quantitative understanding of the functioning of such landscapes. We think that we can offer a fascinating project embedded in an interdisciplinary team where cutting-edge methods in quantitative geomorphology will be applied for practical use. The PhD student will be supervised by F. Schlunegger (Uni Bern) and B. McArdell (WSL), and the student will be enrolled at Uni Bern.

8. PhD Student Position: Identification of novel drug targets in American trypanosomiasis using chemoproteomics and metabolomics

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We offer a PhD project at the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine (Prof. Jürg Gertsch, www.gertschlab.com) for a highly motivated and talented young researcher with strong interest in parasitology, biochemistry and small molecules. Making use of the highly antichagasic natural products identified in a comprehensive parasite infection screening (Salm et al., 2021, iScience, 24(4), p. 102310), we use chemical biology (natural product-derived clickable probes) to identify the underlying targets of the most antichagasic natural products, as well as metabolomics and state-of-the-art Crispr-Cas9 knockout technologies on T. cruzi established in the lab. Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is a potentially life-threatening illness caused by the protozoan parasite T. cruzi and mainly affects the indigenous population in Latin America.

9. PhD Position in Gut microbiota and immune system development

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The symbiotic microorganisms colonize all mucosal body surfaces of newborns and play a key role in shaping the development and maturation of immune system. In the intestine, the first vigorous immune response to colonizing bacteria after birth occurs at weaning. This response termed “weaning reaction” is critical for generating an immune memory that dictate the tolerance or the susceptibility to multiple inflammatory pathologies later in life (Al Nabhani et al., Immunity 2019, Nature Metabolism 2019). In the framework of ERC starting project, we are seeking to gain knowledge regarding the immunological and microbiological mechanisms behind the weaning reaction. We aim to assess the dietary and microbial components that influence immune memory generation and impact the susceptibility to develop both metabolic disorders and immune-mediated diseases. The successful candidate will work on the project using different transgenic germ-free and gnotobiotics mouse models and acquiring variety of techniques including flow cytometry, scRNAseq, mass spectrometry and shotgun metagenomic sequencing.

10. PhD Position in Atmosphere Modelling

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The goal of the proposed PhD project is to extend this model to also cover the collisional regime in atmospheres with a Direct Simulation Monte Carlo module to which our existing model will be coupled. This model will be used to study atmospheres of planetary objects in our own solar system as well as in other solar systems (i.e., exoplanets). Collisional atmospheres are found on a wide variety of objects in our solar system, including Mars, Earth, Venus, Titan, and Callisto. Numerous Earth- and space-based spectroscopic and in situ measurement campaigns of planetary atmospheres within our solar system have provided us with a wealth of data that we can use to test and verify our model. For exoplanets, the first and often only way to determine the planet’s chemical composition is to observe its atmosphere. In addition, atmospheric properties such as density and temperature provide further information about the exoplanet and the environment in which it is situated. One of the main objectives here is to determine if an exoplanet might be habitable.

16. PhD position on “Modeling the energy supply of the brain in health and disease”

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The key energy substrates of the brain are glucose and oxygen. Both are delivered to the brain via an intricate network of blood vessels. Recently, novel datasets resolving the entire vasculature of the mouse brain became available, which offer unique opportunities to study the brain’s energy supply. This requires developing and applying novel numerical methods to simulate blood flow and nutrient transport in large microvascular networks and the surrounding tissue.

18. PhD position in computational modelling of asteroid collisions

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The aim of this project is to study the origin and collisional evolution of asteroids and their precursors – the planetesimals – using realistic rheological models based on advanced laboratory and space mission impact experiments. Data from the upcoming NASA DART mission impact will be used for the validation and calibration of the numerical models. The second part of the project will investigate ≈ 100 km sized objects to determine the merging criteria and fragmentation threshold as a function of their properties. These studies will be the basis for a general framework of collision outcomes, as required in planet formation models. These studies will also include investigations of possible formation scenarios of asteroid (16) Psyche, target of NASA’s ‘Psyche’ mission (scheduled to launch in August 2022). The studies will be conducted using sophisticated Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. The successful candidate is expected to develop a new module to model the post-impact re-accumulation process, to be included in the Bern SPH code.
