9. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to explore the impact of nature-based solutions on small river systems in the Netherlands. The River Dinkel and the River Vecht will be used as case studies to investigate how recent nature-based interventions have affected the hydro- and morphodynamics of these small rivers. The research will be carried out by a combination of field measurements, using acoustic instrumentation (ADCPs and ADVs), to evaluate the current situation and numerical modelling to investigate the future development of the systems. In addition, this research will develop tools to generalize the knowledge from the case studies and to assess the impact of different nature-based designs. The PhD project is part of the Growthfund NL2120 program, which includes many partners from academia, consultancy, and governmental organizations.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in ERC Advanced project “RECRUIT”

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to take the concept of receptor recruitment from biology and use it as a design criterium for self-assembling building blocks into well-defined molecular and nanoscale architectures. Intrinsically weak and dynamic interactions are essential in achieving self-assembly and recruitment. Exquisite control over stoichiometry and structure of the assemblies is achieved by harnessing ground-breaking developments in the understanding of the underlying multivalent interactions. These breakthrough insights will be used to tackle challenges with the identification, sensing and isolation of biological particles, such as viruses and extracellular vesicles, through the development of platforms with nanoscale dimensions and molecular functionalities.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in microfluidics for health: molecular imaging and drug delivery

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, you will work on the production and characterization of novel phospholipid-coated monodisperse microbubbles with a shell functionalized with antibodies that can bind to diseased tissue [1]. When these bubbles are driven by ultrasound, they’ll start to volumetrically oscillate and thereby generate a strong echo. Thus, antibody-functionalized microbubbles in combination with ultrasound imaging can be used for disease diagnosis. Additionally, the oscillating bubbles can create pores in the cell membrane and vascular wall such that they can also be used for drug delivery.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Algorithmic Energy Trading

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD research will be performed as part of an industry funded project on algorithmic energy trading. The goal of this project is to conceive, develop, and evaluate self-learning algorithms that are able to act autonomously on short-term power markets. The algorithms need to calculate intelligent trading decisions (buying and selling energy) in real time while being exposed to a stochastic and dynamic market environment. Designing such algorithms requires working at the intersection of statistical learning and mathematical optimization. Evaluating such algorithms requires close interaction with our industrial project partner from the energy sector. Concretely, the PhD candidate will perform research on understanding how self-learning algorithms can facilitate automated trading on short-term power markets.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developmental BioEngineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Exposure of joint tissues to biomechanical loading is a key characteristic of the moving knee joint and is essential for normal joint health. Indeed patients suffering from osteoarthritis are advised to keep on moving and consequently loading their joint. However excessive loading of the joint can also increase joint deterioration in osteoarthritis. It is unclear what healthy loading of an osteoarthritic knee joint entails and what is pathophysiological loading worsening disease. More in dept knowledge is needed to understand the impact of biomechanical loading on healthy and diseased joint tissues at the molecular and cellular level.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Wide Bandwidth Baseband techniques for 6G

Summary of PhD Program:

With the advancement of radio communication networks and devices, the use of FR2/FR3/aggregated wide bandwidth as well as a larger number of antenna array elements and beamforming, make it possible to achieve high datarates. One of the main challenges is to achieve these high datarates at low power consumption levels and to achieve low latency. This requires careful analysis at an architectural level of analog, digital and hybrid solutions. Equipping each antenna with a digital transceiver optimally exploits the use of antenna arrays, however at the cost of high power consumption and costs. Solutions are sought by using hybrid beamforming, low resolution analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion, approximate computing and at the algorithmic level.
