The use of antibodies and other proteins for targeted tumor therapy has received a great deal of attention in recent years in basic biomedical research and in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry. The focus is on antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), bispecific antibodies (bispecifics) and antibody-based radioimmunotherapy (RIT). However, the use of these active substances is considerably limited by the dose-limiting organ toxicity, especially for the liver and kidneys. The subject of the project to be processed is a method newly developed in our laboratory in order to limit the biomolecular interactions underlying these toxic effects and, based on this, to develop active substances with a more favorable side effect profile or improved through protein engineering.

The group for Functional Nanomaterials at the Technical University of Munich investigates chemical and structural dynamics of functional surfaces such as small oxide-supported metal clusters with state-of-the-art micros-copy and spectroscopy surface science techniques. We offer a stimulating research environment in a multidisciplinary laboratory in one of the highest-ranked universities in Europe. This advertised PhD position is funded within our ERC project on cluster catalysts under ambient conditions. Oxide-supported clusters (≤100 atoms) exhibit attractive properties for industrial catalysis which can change even with the addition of a single atom. In this PhD project, size-selected metal clusters on reducible and non-reducible oxide supports will be compared regarding their stability, reactivity and structure. Specifically, we will use near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) to probe changes in the oxidation state of the clusters, monitor whether they become encapsulated (as for larger nanoparticles), investigate the influence of cluster charge state on reactivity, and study the stability window with regards to sinter resistance in different gas environments.

Do you enjoy technical challenges just as much as scientific ones? Are you keen on building highly sophisticated instruments with your own hands and fiddling with electronics? Do you dream of performing cutting edge nanoscience experiments with equipment set up by yourself? Then this PhD position may just be right for you. We have recently received a high resolution LT-STM including pulsed reactivity and cluster deposition facilities. As the successful candidate you will assemble the apparatus, build up the required infrastructure in our lab, calibrate the experiments and perform first high resolution imaging and reactivity measurements of supported size-selected clusters. Such supported clusters (i.e. particles with fewer than 100 atoms) exhibit attractive properties for industrial catalysis which can change even with the addition of a single atom. With this LT-STM, investigations at cryogenic temperatures will be performed to investigate the structures of different cluster isomers with the same number of atoms, to follow fast dynamics of weakly bound clusters, and to study the interaction of metal clusters with adsorbate molecules. You will prepare samples in situ via sputtering, annealing and metal atom and/or cluster deposition, perform high resolution STM measurements at variable temperatures and correlate structural properties with reactivity.

Lithium – ion batteries as energy storage devices are ubiquitous and their use spans a wide range of applications: from smaller portable devices, electric vehicles to local storage solutions for renewable energy sources. With regard to the breadth of applications, there is a continuing need and an active research landscape to keep improving performance, in particular cost efficiency, safety, service life and the energy and power density of the systems. The focus of the doctoral thesis is on the characterization of the structure of the liquid electrolyte and the solvents that are typically used in today’s Li-ion batteries, ie in particular cyclic carbonate esters and their mixtures. The long- and short-range order in these materials will be determined using neutron and X-ray scattering methods. The macroscopic properties of the solvents such as crystal structure, phase stability and ion transport are systematically investigated by combining neutron and X-ray scattering/X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and impedance spectroscopy at ambient and non-ambient conditions.
