2. Two postdoc positions (m/f/d) | Insect symbiosis

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Beetles engage in various symbioses with single or multiple tyrosine-supplementing bacteria that enhance the host’s cuticle formation and thereby provide protection from biotic and abiotic stressors. The symbiont’s metabolism is under tight host control, but the level and molecular details of control mechanisms and the processes of metabolite exchange are not well understood. However, the high degree of genome erosion in the symbionts and the tight integration of host and symbiont metabolism allow for predicting plausible scenarios and testing them experimentally. The Research Group Chemistry of Insect Microbe Interactions (Dr. Tobias Engl) in the Department of Insect Symbiosis offers a 2-year postdoctoral position (with the possibility of further extension) to elucidate mechanisms and effectors of host symbiont interactions using a range of techniques across multiple beetle families and associated symbionts.

13. Postdoctoral Fellow (m/f/d) | C. elegans Genetics and Molecular Biology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

A highly motivated postdoctoral candidate is invited to lead new projects to address fundamental questions in Genetic Compensation and Transcriptional Adaptation. We recently discovered a new form of genetic compensation that we have termed transcriptional adaptation. Briefly, transcriptional adaptation occurs when a mutation leads to mutant mRNA degradation. The degradation fragments in turn modulate the expression of ‘related’ genes, and consequently varying degrees of phenotypic rescue in some cases. We have observed this phenomenon in zebrafish and C. elegans as well as in mouse and human cells in culture.

18. Postdoctoral Position (m/f/d) | Chemical Biology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The ‘t Hart group at the Chemical Genomics Centre which is part of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund is looking for a post-doctoral candidate (m/f/d) in chemical biology to join our highly multidisciplinary chemical biology team for a project on cyclic disulfide mediated peptide uptake. Cyclic peptides are able to inhibit difficult targets such as protein-protein interactions and protein-RNA interactions with high potency. Although cyclization can improve cell permeability under specific conditions, most cyclic peptides are not able to pass cellular membrane effectively. To make cyclic peptides more widely applicable as chemical biology tools and drug candidates, strategies to overcome this barrier are required. Cyclic disulfides have been demonstrated to be able to undergo disulfide exchange with cell surface receptor thiols and by doing so mediate cell uptake of various cargoes. In this project you will focus on the synthesis of cyclic disulfide amino acids that will simultaneously facilitate peptide cyclization as well as provide a handle for cell permeation via the disulfide exchange pathway. The peptides will then be evaluated using cell biology and microscopy techniques.
