3. Doctoral student in Energy Siencies (CESTAP)

Summary of Doctoral Project:

CESTAP (Competence cEntre in Sustainable Turbine fuels for Aviation and Power) is a newly established centre of competence including academic and industrial partners promoting production and use of sustainable fuels for stationary gas turbines and aviation jet engines. Academic and institute partners include Lund University, Luleå University and the Research Institute of Sweden (RISE). CESTAP is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, with contributions from about 25 industrial partners and the mentioned academic partners. 7. Doctoral student in Physics with focus on combustion physics (CESTAP)

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The research will be performed in close collaboration between research groups at the division of Combustion Physics at the Department of Physics and the division of Heat Transfer. The research groups have an extensive collaboration related to implementation of chemical kinetics mechanisms in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling of combustion. CFD modeling with chemical reactions included are promising tools to aquire a detailed understanding of the combustion of heavy fuels used in jet engines and gas turbines. However, there are numerous challenges in the use of CFD, many of them related to the computational expense that necessitate use of simplified sub-models. Inclusion of chemical kinetics is necessary but computationally expensive, and needs to be further understood and developed. The goal of this sub-project within CESTAP is to achieve detailed understanding of how different factors related to chemical reactions and transport of chemical species in the flame, affect the combustion process and the modeling in CFD. The PhD candidate will spend equal amounts of time working with chemical kinetics and CFD, and it is highly recommended to have significant understanding of at least one of these topics and a strong interest in working with both topics.

8. Doctoral student in Chemical Engineering (CESTAP)

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Research at the department is focused mainly on resource-efficient technologies for sustainable development and is carried out in collaboration with other national and international research groups and companies. Scientists at our department have long experience in pretreatment methods, as well as biotechnological and thermochemical reactions, separation processes, and the design of processes for the production of chemicals, fuels, and other materials from biomass. Lignin is an underutilized component of biomass that will be further processed by other groups in the project and converted into suitable fuel components for gas turbines. The research task in this project will be to characterize and develop new efficient hydrotreatment catalysts for processing lignin or other biomass-based feedstocks that will supply the project group with a suitable feedstock for further processing. The focus will be on in situ and operando studies of catalysts to achieve a detailed understanding of the properties of the active material. To gain fundamental knowledge about the chemical process, model catalysts will be synthesized and used. The simplified model studies will be performed in parallel to traditional studies of industrial applied catalysts.

21. Doctoral student in Biology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Soil microorganisms are responsible for the long-term sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems, due to their role in breaking down organic matter which regulates the soil-atmosphere carbon balance, and the release of plant-limiting nutrients to fuel productivity. Despite the fundamental importance of this decomposition process, it remains unclear how carbon and nutrient mineralization in soils are linked. The overarching aim of this PhD project is to identify how microbial demand for limiting resources determines the balance between carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus release in soils. The outcome of this project will increase our capacity to predict ecosystem responses to changes in resource availability, as well as how microorganisms may be managed to optimize soil carbon sequestration and fertility.
