Summary of Doctoral Project:

The PhD will be part of the project Grammar and agrammatism in Greenlandic (GreenGram), financed by Independent Research Fund Denmark. This project addresses a challenge raised by the first study of agrammatism in a polysynthetic language, Greenlandic. In this study, we found slow speech rates and short utterances, as expected of agrammatic speech, but almost none of the grammatical problems that gave agrammatism its name. The challenge raised by the study can be formulated in two questions: 1. Can the findings in the pilot study be replicated on a larger set of data collected from a group of well-diagnosed subjects? 2. What makes Greenlandic grammar, and presumably polysynthetic grammar in general, (seemingly) immune to agrammatism? The project brings together linguists, aphasiologists and neuroscientists to answer these questions based on the first coherent functional-cognitive theory of what grammar is. The answer to the second question is a key to understanding the neurocognitive mechanisms behind grammar and agrammatism, and a key to aid Greenlanders with agrammatism.

2. PhD scholarship in Algorithmic Fairness and Migration Law

Summary of Doctoral Project:

‘AFAR’ ‘Algorithmic Fairness for Asylum Seekers and Refugees’ investigates the use of new technologies – and particularly, forms of artificial intelligence (AI) – in migration and asylum governance. This includes automation of processes previously done by humans, using simple closed-rule algorithms, as well as more complex machine learning and AI systems. These new technologies are set to radically transform governance, but also risk human rights violations and unfairness, especially in areas such as migration and asylum where the ‘data subjects’ are already disempowered and disenfranchised. This calls for sustained research on what fairness means as a concept, how it can be institutionalized, and how new methods related to data analysis and machine learning can be leveraged in order to support fairness in asylum and migration governance. Summary of Doctoral Project:

The PhD is part of the research project “Divergent Views of Diaspora in Ancient Judaism” (2022-2026), funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and its Sapere Aude programme. Applying newly developed theory from Diaspora Studies, the project investigates the earliest stage of the Jewish diaspora (597-331 BCE). A great variety of imaginative reflections in biblical texts and basic information in historical records suggests that there were a number of different attitudes to living abroad. A key goal of the project is to identity and map all textual depictions in the Hebrew Bible (Ezra-Nehemiah, prophetic texts, diaspora stories) along with archival sources from Egypt (the Elephantine Papyri) and Babylonia (e.g. the Al-Yahudu documents). Four sub-projects, one of which will be conducted by the PhD student, focus on distinct, yet interrelated topics: Generational consciousness abroad; the issue of return; interaction with host authorities; and religious identity and practices in new cultural contexts.

Summary of Doctoral Project:

A number of studies have shown that many disease-linked gene variants operate by destabilizing the structure of the encoded protein. In turn, this causes the protein to engage with molecular chaperones or in more severe cases to the degradation of the protein via the ubiquitin-proteasome system. However, many details of this so called protein quality control (PQC) system remain unresolved. 14. PhD fellowship in Legume and Perennial Crop Root Phenotyping

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Legume crops are important for protein production. However, their root systems are typically less extensive than that of other crops, reducing their resilience as they are sensitive to drought conditions. Perennial crops are of renewed interest due to their known ability to sequester high amounts of C into the soil, through their permanent root growth and activity. In both cases this lead to an interest in breeding for improved root systems, and thus for root phenotyping. Within the PhD project, root phenotyping of faba bean and white clover genotypes will be made, quantifying the root growth itself, as well as differences in drought stress and deep water uptake. Root growth will be phenotyped using rhizoton techniques, including minirhizotrons in the RadiMax semi-field root phenotyping facility at University of Copenhagen. Root data will be obtained using the AI based image analysis software RootPainter. The RadiMax facility will also be used to do phenotyping for water stress and deep water uptake, using stable isotope labelling techiques. White clover will be studied growing in pure stand, and in mixture with grasses, as the crop is normally grown.

The import of nitrogen (N) through biological N2-fixation is essential for plankton productivity in vast areas of the global ocean. In fact, this conversion of N2 gas to ammonium available for growth is fuelling up to 50% of the new production in some regions.
