1. PhD-Position – Development of scalable superconducting quantum systems

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The mission of the newly founded Institute for Functional Quantum Systems (PGI-13) is to create the technological and scientific basis to enable useful quantum computing. We focus on developing quantum devices, improving their coherence and materials, and implementing quantum gates and algorithms. We use superconducting qubits that operate at temperatures close to absolute zero and are controlled by high-speed signals. A key requirement is to preserve high quality quantum operations as we scale. Overcoming these exciting challenges lies at the interface between scientific research and engineering.

2. PhD Position – Growth of phase change materials using molecular beam epitaxy and analysis of atomic arrangement in reduced dimensions employing low energy electron diffraction (LEED)

Summary of Doctoral Project:

With an excellent combination of ultra-fast switching and non-volatile property changes, phase change materials provide unique opportunities for neuromorphic computing and future memory devices. As the latest technology involves devices with a material thickness of just a few nanometers we need to understand the changes in physical properties of these materials in reduced dimensions. In our recent work, we have predicted how structural and optical properties of materials like GeTe change in reduced dimensions down to a few bilayers. In parallel, we demonstrate that these changes are due to fundamental changes of bonding as revealed by high quality GeTe thin films prepared using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).

5. PhD Position – The Role of Agriculture in the Global Energy Transition

Summary of Doctoral Project:

At the Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Techno-economic Systems Analysis (IEK-3), we use integrated models to research how we can achieve a sustainable energy system and what it might look like. For this purpose, we develop a variety of highly complex and very detailed techno-economic models with which we consider local and global energy systems in an integrated way in order to support the progress of the energy transition in the best possible way. For this work, the understanding of global greenhouse gas emissions as well as the current and future distribution of land for the provision of renewable energies is of particular interest. Here, agriculture plays a crucial role as a producer of food and provider of bioenergy as well as a relevant emitter of greenhouse gas emissions.

7. PhD Position – Application of Machine Learning to Ranking Exhaustive Enumerations of Molecular Conformers

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Researchers at the IEK-8 investigate the chemical reactivity of organic molecules emitted to the atmosphere. To accurately predict the rate of reaction using theoretical methodologies, this requires the computationally expensive characterization of all molecular shapes. By joining forces with the Institute for Advanced Simulations (IAS-8), we aim to study and create machine learning techniques to fully enumerate the likely molecular geometries involved for both reactants and transition state, and rank them by their estimated relative energies. This information then allows for reduction in computational effort, as well as enabling hybrid approaches for subsets of the structures.

11. PhD Position – Photonics based on SiGeSn heterostructures

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The integration of photonics components with electronics on the same microchip may potentially solve the bandwidth bottleneck in modern computers and allow devices with decreased power consumption. Nevertheless, light emission from Si -the material underpinning the whole digital world- is inefficient because of its indirect bandgap. Recently SiGeSn semiconductors, a Si-group alloys proved to be a strong candidate to finally add/extend the Si photonics with Si-based laser sources. Si-Ge-Sn heterostructures have been already tested in optoelectronic devices such as light emitting diodes, field effect transistors or detection pixels in the short-wave infrared range. However, energy efficient electrical pumped lasers, and more complex sensing and imaging devices are still to be demonstrated for practical applications.

12. PhD Position – Plant root water uptake and its dependence on soil types

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Water uptake by plant via its roots and subsequent transpiration via the leaves is not only vital for the plants themselves but beyond that, also for the global water cycle as the plants transpire about forty percent of terrestrial precipitation. However, root water uptake is a very difficult process to measure in situ because of the opaque nature of soil. Thanks to a recent technological breakthrough (the Soil Water Profiler, SWaP) at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, root water uptake can be monitored in far greater detail than before, which sheds fresh light on this topic. Combining the SWaP with unique detailed plant and soil hydrologic models, is bound to yield vital new insights into how plants control water uptake from different soils. These insights can help to improve plant performance for climatic conditions that are increasingly challenging.

23. PhD-Position: Monitoring of Energy Systems for Control Purpose

Summary of Doctoral Project:

At FZJ in the framework of the Living Lab Energy Campus initiative we installed sensors that total to more than a 1M measurements point. Your work will focus on defining methods and algorithms for monitoring and state estimation applications, that can take advantage of the large and heterogeneous (in nature and time resolution) nature of this data to support control approaches.

24. PhD-Position: Operation of Local Energy Communities

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The concept of organizing energy systems in Local Energy Communities (LEC) coordinated across multiple energy carriers has gained significant attention in the last few years as a way to combine local coordination with the need for national and international interconnection. In the EU framework, LECs have been recognized by the EU as a key component of the energy transition. The European Commission’s Clean Energy Package has also defined a legislative framework for the operation of LECs that aim at participation of LECs in energy markets. While coupling of multiple energy carriers seems a promising solution to further reduce carbon emission and to maximize generation from renewable sources, their coordinated operation is still a challenge.

30. PhD position – Data-Driven Distribution Models for Robust Design of Island Energy Systems with a High Share of Renewable Electricity

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Optimization-based design of future energy systems is subject to uncertainties that stem from the intermittent and non-dispatchable renewable electricity sources. Fluctuation in local renewable electricity supply usually can be balanced via grid connection. However, some systems, e.g., island systems, require robustness against the uncertainty in their electricity sources. Robust optimization techniques allow to arrive at robust system designs but rely on accurate distribution models for the uncertain data at hand. In particular, distribution models for uncertain time series like renewable electricity generation remain a largely unexplored field in robust design.
