Within the Neurotec project, PGI-7 is aiming to develop novel, energy efficient hardware for future artificial intelligence together with several partners from academia and industry in the Aachen-Jülich area. The improved energy-efficiency is obtained by the use of memristive devices that can store data in an analogue fashion and can be employed as hardware emulation of synapses in neuromorphic circuits. Within Neurotec, the PGI-7 offers a PhD position for the optimization of nanoscale area-dependent memristive devices based on electrically-induced redox processes (so called valence change memories (VCM)). In contrast to the more common filamentary-type of VCM devices, they show superior analogue operation and an improved variability.

2. PhD Position – Metaplasticity of redox-based memristive thin film devices

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The PGI-7 is involved in a Marie-Curie training network “Materials for Neuromorphic Circuits” (MANIC) (https://etnmanic.eu/) that is aiming to synthesize materials that can function as networks of neurons and synapses by integrating conductivity, plasticity and self-organization. Within MANIC, the PGI-7 offers a PhD project that aims to engineer the synaptic plasticity of epitaxial and polycrystalline memristive oxide thin film devices from short-term plasticity to long-term potentiation. This so called metaplasticity inherent to biological systems will be employed to implement different types of learning algorithms. The plasticity will be modified by the interplay of thin film processing conditions (defects, interfaces) and the sequence of electrical stimuli. The project should clarify the interplay between pristine microstructure, filament formation, dynamics of oxygen vacancy movement and synaptic plasticity. The memristive devices will finally be co-integrated into a neuromorphic CMOS chip designed at Bielefeld University.

Organic solar cells belong to the emerging photovoltaic technologies that can contribute to the energy transition in the near future. 33. PhD Position – Cryogenic Digital-to-Analog Converter Design in CMOS for Quantum Computing Applications

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Our team is working on integrated circuits (ICs) which combine analog and digital components from modern CMOS technologies. One research focus is the development of ICs for scalable control and read-out of semiconductor quantum bits (qubits) for Quantum Computing (QC). The ICs will be operated at temperatures below 1 Kelvin, generating very special requirements on circuit design as well as ultra-low power consumption. The focus of this doctoral work will be on the design and implementation of a Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) operated at cryogenic temperatures with the goal of locally tuning qubits into their operational state. The addition of innovative digital-assistance techniques to boost the DAC’s performance should be evaluated and integrated depending on a trade-off to power and area.

Quantum Nanoscience is a novel research field in which quantum effects, such as quantum state superposition, entanglement and coherence, are studied in nanoscale systems. The goal of our research is to explore nanostructures with novel properties which eventually can be used in emerging quantum technologies, such as quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing. These quantum technologies drive the so-called second quantum revolution. We use our extensive knowledge in surface science and nanoscience to contribute to quantum nanoscience and its primary goal: the manipulation and exploitation of quantum-coherent functionality in nanostructures ranging from single atoms and molecules to collective phenomena in self-assembled or by means of atom manipulation techniques designed structures.

38. PhD Position – Multi-scale high resolution near surface geophysics to image the soil-root zone of agricultural plants

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The IBG-3 conducts research to improve our understanding of hydrological and biogeochemical processes in terrestrial systems. Our research contributes to the sustainable and resource-conserving use of soils and water. In the IBG-3, advanced modelling and inversion algorithms are developed and applied for a wide range of hydrogeophysical studies using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems. To meet the challenges of an increasing population in a changing climate, it is highly important to develop innovative and sustainable management strategies for agricultural cropping systems. The Institute of Biological Information Processing – Mechanobiology (IBI-2), is looking for a PhD student with a thesis project that aims at studying mechanical key properties as well the underlying cellular and molecular processes in cell culture models of the epidermis that undergo cyclic stretch.
