About Helen Hay Whitney Fellowships for Postdoctoral Research 2024
In honour of her mother, Helen Hay Whitney, Mrs. Charles S. Payson, formerly Joan Whitney, founded and endowed the Helen Hay Whitney Foundation in 1947. The Foundation was first created to encourage and fund research into rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, but it eventually broadened its scope to encompass connective tissue illnesses and, ultimately, all fundamental biomedical disciplines.
The newly formed Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) suggested to the Trustees that there be an annual 2-3 day conference of fellows, scientific advisers, a few chosen outside scientists, and trustees (if they desire to participate) during the organisational meeting of the Fellowship programme in 1956. The goal was to give the fellows a venue for a semi-formal presentation of their ongoing and prospective research in front of their peers and to allow the SAC to assess their development and potential. About Helen Hay Whitney Foundation
Young biomedical scientists have received independent postdoctoral research assistance since 1947 thanks to The Helen Hay Whitney Foundation Fellowship. The Foundation values and promotes original thought, creativity, and a love of learning new things. The HHWF Fellowship Programme has succeeded in fostering young scientists who later make substantial contributions to the development of biomedical research, frequently with ground-breaking discoveries that are recognised by large awards.
Scholarship Coverage
The Whitney Fellowship is granted for three years, provided that the Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Committee is satisfied with the recipient’s performance during that time. Fellowships of one or two years are not taken into account.
When the fellowship is activated, the Foundation pays for the Fellow’s and his or her family’s transportation to the fellowship location. The shipping of home goods is free of charge. The two-day Annual Fellows Meetings that are held in November also need travel fees, which are also covered by the Foundation. After receiving invoices for all travel expenditures, the Fellow will be directly paid. The yearly stipend and research allowance are in addition to these payments.
A $1,500 research allowance is sent yearly to the hosting school. Without regard to institutional expenses, registration costs, or taxes, it is to be utilised as the Fellow sees fit. Each kid receives a Dependent kid Allowance of $1,500 annually. There isn’t a spouse’s allowance. We will ask for a copy of the birth or adoption certificate(s) if a fellowship is granted and the Fellow informs us that they qualify for the Dependent Child Allowance. The kid allowance will be paid on the day the fellowship is activated and then once a year after that.
Stipend payments are paid by the Foundation to the administering institution semi-annually, depending on the fellowship activation date. Quarterly stipend payments will be sent directly to fellows doing training overseas.
There is no restriction on increasing the stipend. However, it is not appropriate to hold a full fellowship from another source concurrently. Teaching and other non-research activities cannot take up more than 10% of the Fellow’s time.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates who already have a Ph.D., M.D., or an equivalent degree or who are nearing completion of one are eligible to apply for a fellowship. They must also be interested in commencing postdoctoral studies in fundamental biomedical research. The Foundation will consider applications from candidates who, as of the application deadline of June 15, 2024, have no more than ONE YEAR of postdoctoral research experience and who have earned their Ph.D. (or D.Phil. or equivalent) or M.D. no more than TWO or THREE years prior to the deadline.
Fellowships may be given to US residents seeking to work at laboratories in the US, Canada, or abroad as well as to foreign nationals wanting to conduct research in US-only facilities. At the time of application, the majority of candidates should reside in North America. As required by US Immigration, foreign students must get the proper visa papers.
Applications from seasoned researchers or well qualified fellows won’t be taken into account. Fellowships are exclusively available for early postdoctoral training. Training for clinical home personnel is not considered “postdoctoral laboratory training.”
Applicants who intend to hold the fellowship for a long time in the lab where they have previously completed comprehensive predoctoral or postdoctoral training will often not be taken into consideration by the Foundation. A considerable change of setting is advised as the fellowship’s goal is to extend postdoctoral training and experience.
Due to the restricted number of fellowships available, the Foundation only grants one prize each year for training under a specific supervisor. Additionally, it can only accommodate two fellows at a time per laboratory.
During each yearly cycle, the SAC will only consider one application from a laboratory. Applications from several laboratories and supervisors within the same organisation are accepted. If we get more than one, the SAC Chair will select the one that seems to be the most competitive and administratively reject the remainder. If at all feasible, we request that laboratory directors make this decision on our behalf.
The Foundation anticipates that fellowship training will be place in a classroom. It is unacceptable to choose a commercial or industrial laboratory for the training experience.
