1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Risk factors and characteristics of late onset psychosis
Summary of PhD Program:
We offer an opportunity for a highly motivated and skilled PhD student to significantly contribute to cutting-edge research in understanding the foundations of psychosis. Most people who develop schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders receive a diagnosis in their late teens or early adulthood. However, a sizable proportion are diagnosed in mid-life or later. This doctoral project aims to identify the clinical and demographic features of the late onset psychosis population, the associated environmental and genetic risk factors, and blood-derived biomarkers related to late onset psychosis. All of the studies will involve analyses of existing data, and no bench lab work will be conducted.
Application Deadline: 31.May.2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in biostatistics
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project consists of both statistical methodology development and clinical application in the field of population-based cancer patient survival. The overall aim is to evaluate biases arising from missing cancer stage data—an often overlooked aspect in registry data – and develop methods to accommodate such complexities. The performance of the most common approach of dealing with missing data, multiple imputation (MI), has not been assessed in the settings of cancer epidemiology. This project aims to fill this gap in the literature, leading to significant methodological advancements.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in digital pathology
Summary of PhD Program:
At the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet, we are looking to fill the position as PhD student in data-driven life science. Data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics covers data integration, analysis, visualization, and data interpretation for patient stratification, discovery of biomarkers for disease risks, diagnosis, drug response and monitoring of health. The precision medicine research is expected to make use of existing strong assets in Sweden and abroad, such as molecular data (e.g. omics), imaging, electronic health care records, longitudinal patient and population registries and biobanks.
Application Deadline: 20.May.2024
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Clinical Physiology
Summary of PhD Program:
Cardiac MRI is a powerful tool for evaluating cardiac anatomy, function, and signs of pathology in the heart and great vessels. In patients with suspected NSTEMI, there is research that suggests that a cardiac MRI performed in the emergency phase can make diagnoses other than coronary angiography, and shows infarction in areas other than stenoses on coronary angiography in a large percentage of patients. The overall aim of the doctoral project will be to investigate what role cardiac MRI can play in acute NSTEMI and what this may mean for the future care of these patients.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in learning modeling drug responses cancer
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD position focuses on predicting cell type-specific drug responses, identifying transcriptional signatures indicative of treatment sensitivity, uncovering and mitigating paths to drug resistance, and predicting toxicity effects of drugs in healthy cells. In the dynamic research environment at SciLifeLab, you will have access to top-notch computational infrastructure and mentorship from experienced researchers. This project can have significant implications for precision medicine, and contribute to the advancement of personalized cancer therapies.
Application Deadline: 16.May.2024
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in translational lung cancer
Summary of PhD Program:
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented person for a position within the lung cancer sub-group led by dr. Lukas Orre. Our focus is to study lung cancer in great detail at the proteome level to explore novel therapeutic strategies to improve survival in this deadly disease. Specifically, the student will develop and apply sensitive methods for MS-based analysis of clinical lung cancer samples. Further, the student will apply machine learning methods for classification of lung cancer subtype based on the generated MS-data. Finally, the student will evaluate the applicability and value of the developed clinical proteomics methods in a clinical setting.
Application Deadline: 15.May.2024
8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Translational Psychiatry
Summary of PhD Program:
The current doctoral project includes studies with advanced biostatistical and bioinformatic analysis of clinical patient data, and biochemical and molecular data. The studies also involve exposure to wet lab analyses. The aim of the doctoral project is to map immune activation and metabolic and cardiovascular risk in early psychosis, and the effect of physical training on mental health, immune status and metabolic and cardiovascular risk. The project is led by Docent Catharina Lavebratt (main supervisor, https://ki.se/en/people/catharina-lavebratt) and is in collaboration mainly with Professor Yvonne Forsell, Inst. for Global Public Health https://ki.se/personner/yvonne-forsell.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in autoimmune neurology
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a collaborative student with a keen interest in exploring human neuroimmunology. We are a team of clinically oriented researchers focusing on the immunology underpinning autoimmune encephalitis. The etiology of this group of disorders is only just starting to be unraveled. Furthermore, the immune system of the human brain has been comparatively little studied. Answering both fundamental and clinical questions in this realm is the focus of the Theorell team. You will find our team and the wider Mjösberg group an optimal place to grow and drive outstandingly important research with both short- and long-term clinical impact.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neurometabolism
Summary of PhD Program:
The Furlan lab aims to discover the neuronal circuits regulating food preference, homeostasis, and body weight regulation, with a focus on obesity (Furlan et al., Nat. Neuro, 2022). To do this, we employ a multidisciplinary approach, including transcriptomics, circuit-tracing methods, and functional manipulation strategies, in the mouse model. We believe that interrogation of these understudied circuits will critically advance our understanding of how the brain and body achieve important physiological processes and will contribute to the development of novel approaches to treat obesity and metabolic syndrome. Our lab is part of the Neuroscience department, in the Biomedicum, a vibrant, highly interactive, internationally recognized center for medical research with outstanding research infrastructure.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in DNA-based digital data storage
Summary of PhD Program:
Current technologies for long term data storage do not provide a sustainable way to store the increasing amount of data generated in the world therefore new approaches need to be developed. One of the candidates for alternative data storage medium holding a lot of promise is DNA as, if the technology gets fully realized, it offers several advantages: high storage density, exceptional stability on long timescales among other things. However, DNA-based information storage technologies in their current form mostly provide cold-storage solutions with limited real-life applicability. We are looking for a PhD student that would join our team to help us in improving current manifestations of DNA-based data storage in terms of data stability and dynamic data operability in vitro and in vivo as part of the Dura-store project (https://durastore.eu), participating in the European Innovation Council’s Pathfinder Challenge for DNA-based digital data storage.
