1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electronic Systems with focus on electrodynamic modeling
Summary of PhD Program:
We are now looking for a PhD student who, together with the support of our team of researchers, want to develop into a independent researcher in this field. We have several different project opportunities and orientations within electrodynamic calculations and these applications. Our background and academic excellence lies in integral equation based solutions, ex PEEC that is similar to the Method of moments, of electromagnetic problems. We use established tools but perform the majority of the scientific work in own software based on Matlab or C++.
Application Deadline: 2024-07-14
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Economics
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for one or more PhD students in Economics. As a PhD student within the Economics unit, you will be part of the research environment of the Social Sciences Division, which has some 60 employees. You will be placed in the Economics unit, which has around 20 employees. Research at the Social Sciences Division is oriented towards social science aspects of natural resource, environmental and energy issues. Research at the Division is carried out in intra-disciplinary as well as in multidisciplinary projects where economists collaborate with the other disciplines in the Division, as well as with other researchers within the university and elsewhere. We strive for a clear international orientation in our research.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Energy Engineering with special emphasis on evaluation of biochar for sustainable steelmaking
Summary of PhD Program:
The position is associated with the project “GreenCarbon4Steel – Tailoring Green Carbon for Steel Industry”, funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency. The project is led by BEST – Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies GmbH and LTU is one of the main scientific partners. The project aims to develop application-tailored biomass pre-treatment procedures via pyrolysis to meet the identified key properties for biomass-based materials in the current and future steel-making processes, such as blast furnaces and electric arc furnaces. This requires knowledge of how the reaction conditions of pyrolysis reactors affect the biochar properties. Therefore, the project combines lab and pilot scale experiments with modelling activities.
Application Deadline: May 6, 2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Accelerating Nanomaterial Growth Simulations with Machine Learning
Summary of PhD Program:
In this project we will extract affordable potentials from expensive DFT results through machine learning (ML) to accelerate nanomaterial growth in MD simulations. Such interactomic potentials are also called force fields (FF). We have developed a ML-FF for carbon and iron that can be used to model the catalytic growth of carbon nanotubes, which we want to extend to include more elements, like hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, as well as other metals (copper, nickel, rutenium, platinum, …). This project involves using DFT to construct datasets of labelled atomic configurations, which will be used to train ML-FFs for MD simulations. Your research will for example target growth mechanisms and fundamental properties associated with nanomaterials. Based on these insights you will predict novel catalysts for controlled growth to achieve better quality products.
