The research group in Cellular and Molecular Pediatrics is one among three interconnected research groups in Section of Comparative Pediatrics and Nutrition. The section offers a highly international, diverse and interdisciplinary environment, performing translational research and teaching related to physiology, immunology, microbiology, nutrition and diseases in both laboratory animals and human infants and children. 3. Fully Funded PhD Position in High-Energy Heavy-ion physics (ALICE Experiment)
Summary of PhD Program:
With the newly received ERC grant, the research group will develop a novel methodology using a new approach, a multi-particle cumulants technique. This will give unique insights into the initial geometric conditions, shape, size, and their correlations and fluctuations. To achieve this, we will measure various collision systems (129Xe, 16O, and proton) during the LHC Run 3. These pioneering measurements, and the resulting new analyses, will decisively advance our understanding of those crucial initial conditions, the platform upon which the analysis of the collision rests. The results of this ERC will make it possible to probe the precise nuclear structure of 129Xe, 16O at the LHC energies, a million times higher than the existing nuclear structure studies in low-energy nuclear physics.

The project will focus on experimental development of a new platform for quantum physics with cold atoms coupled to nano-scale dielectric structures. Summary of PhD Program:
You will investigate the structure and function of macromolecular complexes that drive Herpes simplex virus replication using in vitro reconstitution and single particle cryo-EM. Herpes simplex is one of the most widespread viral infections with currently no option for cure. Moreover, resistance to antiherpetic medication is emerging necessitating the search for new targets. A major caveat in developing anti-herpetic compounds is a lack of structural information of the herpes simplex replication system. Our mission is to generate these structural insights to foster a better understanding of the herpes simplex replication strategy. In this project, you will recombinantly purify components of the Herpes simplex replication machinery, reconstitute viral replication complexes in the test tube, and study their structure and function by single particle cryo-EM and functional biochemical assays.

Summary of PhD Program:
During the last decade it has become evident that a range of complex diseases are associated with gut microbiome (GM) imbalances, amongst other metabolic syndrome, colon cancer, autism spectrum disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This makes the GM an attractive therapeutic target for faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), but widespread use of FMT is unlikely due to inconsistent treatment outcomes and the risk of infection by bacteria and human viruses that are transferred along with the donor material. Recent studies point at the bacterial viruses (bacteriophages, in short phages) as the driving element for successful FMT. The PhageX project is based on the bold hypothesis that phage transplantation not only can have same effect as FMT, but it can also be transformed into a reproducible production of safe phage therapeutics that warrant low risk of infection of pathogenic bacteria and human viruses from the donor material.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Asylum Decision-Making and the Reception of International Rulings
Summary of PhD Program:
Over the past few years, several international courts have faced critique by policymakers for developing international law too dynamically. Consequently, scholarly literature argued that we are entering a period of backlash, with states actively trying to hedge against the domestic impact of international rulings. Yet, little is known about how – and under what conditions – interpretive shifts are accepted or resisted within the day-to-day work of domestic legal systems. The research project ANCHOR, led by Associate Professor Nora Stappert and funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, focuses on international refugee and migration law to understand the reception of international rulings: While an area of frequent political contestation, there also has been a significant increase in international case law in this field. The project draws on an extensive dataset of case law from the Danish Refugee Appeals Board (Flygtningenævnet) and combines legal doctrinal and computational methods.

But there are situations where we might be able to replace animal studies with something smarter. 12. Fully Funded PhD Position in epidemiological modelling of mosquito borne disease transmission
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of the project is to develop basic mechanistic mathematical models to estimate the potential transmission intensity of various pathogens (number of infectious bites that may arise from each infected host). The project aims to produce 10 specific models for mosquito borne pathogens affecting public health (West Nile virus, Usutu virus, Rift Valley fever, Japanese encephalitis, Venezuelan-, Western- and Eastern equine encephalitis, Sindbis virus, Inkoo and mosquito borne tularemia). The models will be predominantly mechanistic rather than statistic, hence rather than fitting models to existing transmission data, the aim is to develop models that mimic the actual biological processes step for step. The emphasis is therefore on biology and epidemiology and not on statistics and advanced programming.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in computed tomography in large animal (equine) orthopaedics
Summary of PhD Program:
While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an excellent imaging modality for imaging tissues with high water content, like soft tissues and articular cartilage, low magnetic field MRI, as mostly used in equine practice, cannot detect mild or small lesions. Computed tomography (CT) allows for faster imaging and significantly better image fidelity for small objects. But, due to relatively similar X-ray attenuation of synovial fluid, soft tissues, and cartilage, CT is not able to detect lesions in articular cartilage and soft tissues (or early bone lesions characterized by bone oedema). The principal advantages of dual-energy CT (DECT) over conventional CT in the musculoskeletal setting relate to the additional information provided regarding tissue composition, artifact reduction, and image optimization. Within this PhD project the goal is to explore and establish the use of DECT in large animal (mainly equine) orthopaedics, e.g., for assessment of bone oedema in bone trauma or infection, detection of cartilage pathology, and/or diagnosis of soft tissue injuries.
