The Co-Centre for Climate+ Biodiversity+ Water is seeking to recruit an experienced and motivated Research Fellow to play an active role as part of a new research project team across several Schools at Queen’s University Belfast. The Co-Centre is an exciting new tri-jurisdictional initiative spanning Northern Ireland, Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland, which is managed jointly by QUB and Trinity College Dublin and funded by the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), DAERA and UKRI.

The Co-Centre will seek to be the home of research, innovation, and policy development across the interlinked challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and water degradation on the islands of Ireland and Britain, with the goal of integrating research across both islands to address these crises. The Research Fellow will assist in the Monitoring Platform which aims to develop new monitoring approaches and evidence-based research results for climate, biodiversity and water to support effective decision-making. This post will specifically assist in the Monitoring Platform Project which aims to deliver a holistic understanding of peatland restoration past, present and future, through digital technologies.

The successful candidate will work as part of a research programme that is developing Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSC) derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) as novel therapy for the treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The main purpose of this project is to develop and optimise a scalable process of isolation of a specific EV fraction using bioreactor system and to demonstrate therapeutic usefulness of the resultant EV product and established mechanism of action in the in vitro models of ARDS. This project is milestones-driven so strict adherence to deadlines is essential. The successful applicant is expected to lead this ambitious cutting edge research project and will be involved with supervision, planning, day-to-day lab management, collaborations and outreach.

The successful candidate will primarily work within a multidisciplinary team undertaking research focused on sustainable ruminant production, with an emphasis on methane mitigation. The post holder will work with industry partners locally and globally to deliver impact for the agricultural and food sector. The successful candidate will work alongside the lead, a bioinformatician and a project manager within the new Centre of Excellence in Agri-Food Microbiomics. The candidate will be expected to perform the research required (for example in vitro testing) and the reports thereafter in a timely and professional manner. Priority will be given to candidates with research interests and expertise in anaerobic microbiology, particularly with respect to livestock microbiomes.

The principal aim of the post is to undertake a programme of quantitative work conducting longitudinal analysis of child welfare data (SOSCARE) linked with maternity data (NIMATS) and area level Indicators of Multiple Deprivation (linked through postcode).

The aim is to:

Identify rates of, and factors associated with, antenatal, postnatal and early years (0-2 years) involvement with child and family social work in the general population.
Identify rates of, and factors associated with, repeat removals of multiple children from the same mother and care outcomes.
Map broader patterns of repeated contact with children’s social care (2010-2017) and the factors which predict later statutory intervention.
