2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing a behavioural intervention to implement a digital decarbonisation approach and the impact on physical and mental health
Summary of PhD Program:
Digital decarbonisation provides a real-world strategy that we can use to encourage people to reduce their use of digital technology, however there is currently no intervention that has been developed to help us successfully achieve this. This studentship will use behaviour change methods, and intervention development frameworks to investigate potential barriers and facilitators towards digital decarbonisation efforts, before building and testing a real-world intervention that can be rolled out to help individuals and organisations reduce their digital carbon footprints, and reduce the environmental impact of high technology use across different technologies (e.g., use of wearables).

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantum reservoir computing for artificial intelligence
Summary of PhD Program:
The rapid development of Quantum Technologies 2.0 over the last two decades – especially in quantum communication, simulation and computation – has pushed this field into the mainstream of technological innovation, with the expectation of major economic impacts. While universal quantum computing is the stated Holy Grail of Quantum Technologies 2.0, its implementation on a scale necessary to practically solve high impact problems remains elusive for current, or feasible in the near-term, technologies.
Application Deadline: 28 June 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) assessment and intervention
Summary of PhD Program:
Current PCS diagnostics and treatments rely heavily on self-reported symptoms, lacking objectivity. Eye movements and pupillometry show potential as biomarkers but need further research. Additionally, treatment for PCS using vestibular rehabilitation techniques has shown promise but further research is also needed. This PhD studentship aims to integrate eye tracking technology for PCS assessment and use VR balance therapy to enhance care.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Future Propulsion and Power
Summary of PhD Program:
Our projects focus both on the detail of key technologies and on the integrated nature of the gas turbine as a whole. This programme will teach the skills, and provide the necessary environment, to develop research that delivers both academic excellence and maximum industrial impact. You will be part of the Loughborough Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC), widely recognised as a world leading research centre, taking part in the development of modern aero-engines – working in a dynamic and highly competitive environment.
Application Deadline: 25 June 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Modelling of Human Structure Interaction Effects for Vibration Serviceability Design
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will systematically analyse the reliability of these two models to represent HSI effects, since understanding their deficiencies is considered as a key first step towards developing more accurate predictions in future generations of models. As part of the project, the analysis should also be probabilistic so that both experimental and modelling uncertainties can be quantified explicitly. Large datasets from real-world lively footbridges excited by walking motions of multiple human test subjects will form the basis of the validation process.
Application Deadline: 30 June 2024
8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Examining mental health and wellbeing service provision for rugby players experiencing catastrophic injury
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD studentship has been match-funded by the IPF, who provide ongoing support to rugby players who experience catastrophic SCIs or TBIs while playing the game. The IPF have identified a need to better understand the mental health and wellbeing needs and support provision of their client-base, so that they can better tailor their mental wellbeing offers to their clients.
The aim of this unique PhD research is to explore mental health and wellbeing service provision for IPF clients, with the objective of co-creating bespoke evidence informed recommendations about mental health service provision, by working collaboratively with the IPF.
Application Deadline: 30 June 2024
9. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Inclusive Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
Engineering is potentially the most important career in the world, influencing the lives of billions of people worldwide due to the enormous range of tools, equipment and products designed or created by engineers. Tackling engineering skills shortages is the most important business imperative work on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for the future of engineering identified by the Royal Academy of Engineering, with large gaps in graduates required by industry. With the Royal Academy of Engineering, Professional Engineering Institutions, Charities and Global Engineering Companies recognising these issues, many initiatives have begun to deliver greater recognition of challenges surrounding under-representation.
Application Deadline: 31 July 2024
10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Establishing important physical and performance characteristics of elite junior tennis
Summary of PhD Program:
This studentship will seek to better understand the holistic development of elite junior tennis players, by establishing the technical, tactical and physical characteristics of match play and training. The findings will be used to enhance junior players’ training programmes and ultimately support their transition to full-time professional tennis. This PhD studentship is co-funded by Loughborough University (LU) and Loughborough University National Tennis Academy (LUNTA).

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Discrete and continuous integrable systems
Summary of PhD Program:
The goal of this project is to develop connections between discrete and continuous integrable systems, particularly those for which the underlying structure is a “Lax pair”. A Lax pair can be thought of as a system of linear equations, which are compatible if and only if an additional condition is satisfied. If we can write a given nonlinear differential (or difference) equation as the compatibility condition of a Lax pair, that provides it with sufficient structure to make it an integrable system. In this project we will explore algorithmic approaches to turn discrete Lax pairs into continuous ones.
Application Deadline: 23 June 2024
12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Digital Poverty, Exclusion and Deprivation
Summary of PhD Program:
Digital inequalities are complex, relative to time and social context and deeply linked to other aspects of social inequality. This specific project opportunity seeks research proposals that explore the nature and effects of digital exclusion, focusing on lived experience and understanding these at an individual, household and community level. We are seeking proposals that detail your specific research focus in this area and its potential original contributions to academic debates on digital exclusion. This may include research on digital inclusion policies and interventions, and/or the factors and contexts that limit digital capabilities and inclusion.
Application Deadline: 12th July 2024
13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Creating hybrid nanodevices for optical control of nanomagnetic data processing

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Automated High Throughput Machine Learning-guided Condition Optimisation for Biocatalysis
Summary of PhD Program:
To achieve net zero in chemicals synthesis and production, low energy approaches are critical. Here, biocatalysis provides not just a low-energy solution, but one which can also be highly selective, important in the production of high purity chiral materials such as pharmaceuticals. Use of biocatalysis at scale has been limited, however, due to the need to optimise low concentrations and slow rates of otherwise promising candidates.
Application Deadline: 28 June 2024
16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Athermal photonic devices for absolute distance measurement
Summary of PhD Program:
High-precision range metrology is fundamental for precision manufacturing in aerospace, robotics, automation, and high-value manufacturing with computer-controlled machinery. The application of frequency scanning interferometry (FSI) to long-range (>1 m) high-speed (100,000 coordinates per second) absolute distance measurement is currently impractical at reasonable cost. This is due to the extremely high modulation frequencies (typically 100 GHz or more) that require expensive data acquisition boards. Dr Ruiz’s lab at Loughborough University proposed a solution based on adaptive delay lines (ADL) that can reduce the required signal sampling rate by orders of magnitude, thus paving the way for the use of fast sweeping sources such as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers.
