1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Social Networks and Digital Cultural Consumption

Summary of PhD Program:

We are an interdisciplinary lab studying social and behavioral phenomena using network concepts. Members of the lab actively develop theories, methods and software in a variety of domains, for our own empirical studies and for our collaborative endeavors across multiple discplines. The group of Prof. Christoph Stadtfeld is looking for a motivated PhD student interested in combining social network research with analysis of digital trace data in the domain of music tastes and cultural consumption.

Application Deadline: August 23, 2024

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Organic Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Photochemical transformations play an important role in altering natural organic matter in aquatic systems. These projects are focused on the study of photoexcited natural organic matter and other reactive oxidants that are formed in essentially all waters exposed to sunlight. Photoexcited natural organic matter and the other photochemically generated oxidants are responsible for oxidizing sulfur-containing compounds and oxidizing organic carbon to biolabile compounds and inorganic carbon.

Application Deadline: 15 September 2024

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Macromolecular engineering of covalent adaptable networks

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project builds upon efforts in our lab to understand how the molecular nature of dynamic polymer networks influences their mechanical properties [Webber and Tibbitt Nat. Mater. Rev. 2022, 7, 541–556]. This will include the chemical design of new dynamic polymer networks; using rheology to link molecular behavior to macroscopic behavior [Marco-Dufort et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2020, 142, 15371–15385]; and physical modeling to develop structure–function relations.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Learning from Observations and Experts for facilitating Decision Support for Wind Energy Structures

Summary of PhD Program:

The scientific aim of IntelliWind is to reduce the role of humans in the decision process, as well as reducing the need for direct human interventions in the operations and maintenance process for wind energy structures. This frees up human resources to carry out more elaborate, better planned, and more efficient operations – leading to significant improvements in cost efficiency (3-5% lower Levelized Cost of Energy), and reduced labour-intensiveness of wind farm operations.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in esigning, modelling & optimising charging systems for E-vehicles based on GaN devices

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking individuals with outstanding academic credentials and a high level of motivation to engage in doctoral-level research on the development of efficient charging systems for future electric vehicles with a battery system voltage exceeding 1 kV. The project will investigate stationary high-power charging stations and solutions for multi-input capable onboard “combo”-chargers. The high-power charging station should be designed to facilitate direct current (DC) fast charging with voltages exceeding 1 kV and charging currents exceeding 500 A.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemical Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The position focuses on the development of chemigenetic tools that combine synthetic fluorophores with genetically encodable components like self-labeling protein tags for application in cell biology. The work is highly interdisciplinary and collaborative, involving synthetic chemistry and/or protein engineering as well as cell biology and fluorescence microscopy. The position is available from January 2025 onwards or earlier upon agreement.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sensing and Controlling the Large-Scale Anaerobic Digestion of Human Excreta to Minimize Health Risks and Carbon Emissions

Summary of PhD Program:

Recently, the commercialisation of low-cost, modular anaerobic digesters (also known as “biogas digesters” or “biogas plants”) has increased demand for this well-established, but far from optimised, technology. Much of the interest associated with the new systems comes from the need for the methane-rich biogas, which can be used as a sustainable source of cooking fuel. Components for pressurising, storing, and burning biogas have also become plentiful. However, the resulting effluent contains harmful concentrations of pathogens and must be treated further before it is safe for handling or disposal.
