Summary of Doctoral Project:
Our group has developed the first biomimetic method to spin artificial spider silk fibers and succeeded in establishing a production and purification method of recombinant silk proteins that results in unprecedented protein yields (Andersson et al. Nat Chem Biol. 2017; Schmuck et al. Mater Today. 2021). Furthermore, we have sequenced a whole spider genome of outstanding quality and have analyzed the transcriptome of the silk glands. Our research group consists of two PhD students, two technicians and three post docs and one researcher and is funded by the European Research Council, Swedish Research Council, FORMAS and Center for Innovative Medicine. The research group is located at Karolinska Institutet, campus Flemingsberg, and at SLU in Uppsala.

Summary of Doctoral Project:
Our lab examines fibrotic scarring and its impact on axon regeneration and functional recovery after damage to the central nervous system (CNS). We have discovered a new population of perivascular cells, called pericytes of type A, as a new source of fibrotic scar tissue (Göritz et al., Science, 2011) and identified pericytic-derived scarring as a therapeutic target to achieve axon regeneration and functional recovery after spinal cord injury (Dias et al., Cell, 2018). We recently showed that fibrotic scarring of perivascular cells is a conserved mechanism in the adult mammalian CNS (Dias et al., Nature Com., 2021). The intended project is based on these findings and aims to further elucidate the mechanism of scarring.

Summary of Doctoral Project:
Hausser’s lab researches quantitative principles in tumor biology. We do it along two lines of research: (1) Within a tumor, individual cancer cells express different genes. These differences facilitate resistance to anti-cancer therapy because a given therapy may fail to eliminate the diversity of cancer cells. We are interested in mapping the evolutionary boundaries of this diversity and exploring how to explain these boundaries in order to treat heterogeneous tumors. (2) We research equations that indicate how important tumor properties relate to each other: cellular composition of the tumor, heterogeneity of cancer and immune cells present in the tumor, spatial organization, tumor growth rate, secretion rate of metastatic cells, and so on. Finding the laws of tumor biology has great potential for the diagnosis, prognosis and design of immunotherapy, much like the laws of mechanics and aerodynamics currently support the design of cars and aircraft.
