2. PHD Student Vacancy in NWO-funded Perspectief programme Optical Wireless Superhighways
Summary of Doctoral Project:
In this project, focusing on physical layer security, we will demonstrate authentication for quantum and classical communication links with Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs), remotely read out via a single-spatial-mode. We will use a new class of PUFs that can be read out through standard optical fibres or free-space links. Our implementation of single-mode PUFs exploits the time/frequency domain for the encoding challenge / response space. Together with the PUFs, we will develop tools to generate challenge-forming few-photon light pulses and to validate PUF responses at the few-photon level, with the aim of a proof-of-principle demonstration using the terrestrial free-space optical link developed by consortium partners.

3. PhD position on Internet Path Security
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The goal of this PhD project is to study how we can increase Internet path security in the context of the current Internet. This work will build on existing ideas, such as RPKI and BGPsec, but also the things we can learn from novel Internet architectures such as SCION, and novel initiatives such as the proposed Autonomous System Provider Authorization (ASPA) standard. We also envisage the potential to extend path security beyond the IP domain, e.g., incorporating path information on lower layers of the OSI model, all the way down to the physical layer (as the Internet is ultimately also vulnerable to physical attacks).

9. PhD position Capture, storage and mineralization of CO2 in particle
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The goal of the PhD project is to develop a method for the fast, permanent and safe storage of CO2 in solid particles (e.g. porous silica, clays or mineral carbonates) suspended in aqueous salt solutions. The efficiency of the initial CO2 capture depends on the fluid composition (ions, pH and other organic/inorganic additives), the gas partial pressures, and the influence of these variables will be studied at ambient temperature. Conversion of captured CO2 to carbonate minerals at variable fluid composition, elevated temperature and pressure will be optimized using an autoclave microreactor and/or microfluidic chips that also mimic the pore geometry of potential storage media (e.g. reservoir rock).

The Department Mechanics of Solids, Surfaces & Systems (MS3), part of the faculty of Engineering Technology (ET) is currently seeking a PhD candidate in the area of modelling friction in crushed rock grains (gouge) in reservoir faults. The work will be done in the Surface Technology and Maintenance (SEM) group, where we work on topics related to surfaces and interfaces, damage and failure mechanisms, e.g. frictional failure in faults leading to earthquakes. Earthquakes reflect the phenomenon of sudden slip when the frictional strength of faults in the Earth’s crust is overcome. This project seeks to understand the physical processes controlling this sudden failure through numerical modelling and lab experiments and applying the results to acquire large-scale models for earthquakes caused by gas extraction, geothermal energy production and subsurface storage.

Digital information technology is increasingly interwoven with our society and individuals’ daily lives. With these digital technologies tracking and influencing our everyday behavior, they should align with the user’s needs and values. To achieve this, personal agents need to model the user’s informational and motivational attitudes such as goals, values, norms, beliefs, and their interrelations in order to derive support actions that are aligned with the user. This is challenging because 1) user models need to be understandable to and modifiable by the user, 2) conflicts may occur in the user’s motivations, and 3) the user’s state and motivations may change over time and in different contexts. 12. PhD position on understanding the melting dynamics in turbulent flows
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Melting, dissolving, and erosion are processes that are frequently found in nature and technology. Contrary to common believe these three processes do not always smooth the surface, but rather form structures and sometimes even sharpen the surface. This leeds to the formation of e.g. ice scallops and pinnacles, for some examples of patterning and roughening. The continuously changing shape of e.g. a melting iceberg and its interaction with the external turbulence is very complicated as it involves three boundary layers: kinetic, thermal, and solutal (due to the salt concentration). The interaction between those boundary layers is highly complex and not understood. In particular, what is the effect of the surface roughness on the melting rate? The aim is to experimentally study the interaction of these boundary layers in a controlled lab environment such as to increase our understanding of these phenomena and their relevance on e.g. the melting rate of ice of icebergs and (tidal) glaciers, all important in view of global warming and precision required in technological applications.
