The main physics interests of the Uppsala group are studies of hyperons – three-quark systems just like the protons but where one or several of the light quarks are replaced by one or several heavier quarks, e.g. strange quarks. By studying how hyperons are produced and how they decay, we can measure their internal structure at the femtometer level – that is, distances of 10-15 m! In this way, we gain insights into how the strong interaction bind quarks into the systems we are made of. The PhD student will work with microbial degradation of PFAS for remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater within the research project bioPFAS. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are extremely difficult to degrade at the same time as many of these substances are both harmful to human health and mobile in the environment. Type 2 diabetes is an important public health challenge, which results in considerable morbidity and premature mortality.
