Summary of PhD Program:
The project “Implementation of the 3Rs in Swiss Law” is based in law. The 3R principles (Reduce, Replace, Refine) are now widely recognized internationally in the field of animal testing, but their potential has not been fully exploited. The project investigates the extent to which the 3R principles could be anchored more clearly in Swiss law, where opportunities and limits lie, which current animal-ethical, social and political developments have to be taken into account and what development potential there is for this. In addition to developing the material basis, the focus is on examining the concrete implementation of the proposals, which is why a close exchange with various actors from the field of legal application and with experts is planned.

18. PhD Position in Cognitive and Behavioral Decision Research
Summary of PhD Program:
At CBDR (led by Prof. Dr. Renato Frey) we aim to contribute to a better understanding of how people make decisions in the modern world full of risk and uncertainty. To this end we study the psychological mechanisms (e.g., cognitive, social, affective processes) underlying people’s risk perceptions and risk-taking behaviors. We employ various empirical methods including data collection in real-life contexts (e.g., by means of app-based measurements) and field experiments (e.g., to test behavioral interventions and the effects of different forms of risk communication). Moreover, we make use of the latest data-science methods for cognitive and statistical modeling, and we strongly endorse open and reproducible research practices. Last but not least, we are committed to a culture of diversity and inclusion in our various activities as a research group.
