We are seeking a biomedical optics researcher to design and translate the next generation of hyperspectral imaging systems for surgical guidance using quantitative fluorescence. Acquiring HSI in real-time through the surgical microscope (the workhorse of modern neurosurgical practice) nonetheless remains complex and requires careful optimisation of the imaging pipeline as well as an improved understanding of light-tissue interaction.

Recent clinical trials have revealed new classes of immune-based cancer therapies that target key pathways of the immune and immune-interacting tumour microenvironment. Either alone or in combination with conventional therapeutics or targeted therapies, these interventions have led to unprecedented results in patients with previously untreatable advanced disease. The future development of this class of agents for the significant fraction of cancer patients who do not respond to current immune therapies demands more in depth understanding of the anti-tumoral immune response. Clinical research into factors affecting treatment response or survival in patients with cancer frequently involves a statistical mean with little attention to outliers who respond considerably better or worse than average. Exploring the reasons underlying an “atypical response” provides an opportunity to increase understanding of the mechanisms involved in cancer progression and treatment resistance, accelerate biomarker identification, and potentially identify new targets for novel therapies. “Atypical responders” can encompass three sub- categories of patients: “exceptional responders” (those with an unusually favourable treatment response), “rapid progressors” (patients demonstrating an unusually poor or no therapeutic response), and “exceptional survivors” (patients who have far outlived their initial prognosis).

PINNACLE (The Epidemiology Of ParkINson In LatiN AmeriCa: Learning From UndEr-represented Populations) is a project founded by the Michael J Fox Foundation to determine parkinsonism and Parkinson’s Disease (PD) prevalence, incidence, correlates and impact in six Latin American countries (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, Venezuela) and to also explore the main cognitive and neuro-psychiatric features of Parkinson’s Disease. This postdoctoral position, funded by the EPSRC Research Programme on Next Generation of Molecular Imaging and Therapy with Radionuclides (MITHRAS), aims to study the biological effects within a variety of cells radiolabeled with various PET radionuclides and to quantify zirconium-89-oxine radiolabeled cells administered into animals for cell tracking purposes, using preclinical PET imaging. The post-doctoral RA will work with Prof Rubia and her team on an exciting multi-centre double-blind, sham-controlled randomised controlled trial (RCT) funded by the NIHR to test a novel non-pharmacological brain stimulation therapy. The Monarch eTNS System stimulates the external trigeminal nerve (eTNS) which has shown to improve ADHD symptoms in a proof-of-concept trial in the USA and is approved by the FDA for use in children with ADHD. This study will recruit 150 children and adolescents aged 8-18 years old with ADHD at King’s College London and the University of Southampton.
