6. Research Associate in Data-Driven Modelling of Grain Boundaries

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We are looking for a new team member for the modelling group of Dr Chris Race to work on a Royal Society funded research project exploring fundamental properties of grain boundaries. Polycrystalline metals contain a wide variety of grain boundaries, which play an important role in determining their properties. Atomistic simulation is a key tool in predicting and understanding those properties, but to date simulations have focused only on a narrow subset of special boundaries, unlikely to be representative of the true variety in nature. We are working on establishing methods and developing open-source tools suitable for the study of general grain boundaries.

11. Research Assistant OR Research Associate in Automated Testing of Trusted Execution Environments

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

A TEE (Trusted Execution Environment) runs in parallel with the Android OS but is completely isolated from the rest of the system. Such isolation protects TEE from malicious apps and potential vulnerabilities in the Android kernel. To keep users and their data secure and safe, it is essential to ensure the security and privacy of the TEE. You will work closely with our industrial partner on an innovative fuzz testing method that is driven by formal verification for exploiting the vulnerabilities in the TEE. 13. Research Associate in the Markov Random Field (MRF) Model for Genetic Variation

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The human genome contains 3,000 million base pairs. Mutations within the genome occur stochastically, but their fixation in the population depend on their effect on the fitness of the individuals. The effect of those mutations is not independent of the variants already present in the genome, but is influenced by them. This creates fitness-related dependencies which coexist with fitness-independent dependencies caused by the population structure. We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to simulate the genomic variation within a population and model its underlying causes. The candidate will have a PhD in Applied Mathematics, and have a strong background in data simulation and analysis. The role will involve simulating human variation data, and modelling dependencies using Markov Random Fields. In addition to data simulation and quantitative analysis, the PDRA will be responsible for writing up and disseminate the findings in conjunction with the supervisors and collaborators.

25. Research Associate

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We are seeking a researcher to join a collaborative project between Manchester and Cambridge, funded by the Wellcome Trust. The project focuses on the role of neuronal activity in facilitating the emergence of network function late in Drosophila embryogenesis, during a critical period. Critical periods provide exciting opportunity to manipulate circuit development and offer novel therapeutic approaches to prevent, or indeed reverse, neurological disease. We recently discovered a critical period in the development of the Drosophila larval locomotor circuit, showing this to be a universal phenomenon. This experimental system allows us to work with identified neuron pairs, to investigate signalling pathways and circuit mechanisms, including changes in synaptic connectivity and transmission. The specific focus of this post is how altered neural activity is sensed and transduced by a developing nervous system, with specific interest in cellular redox states.

10. Research Associate in the Ecology of Soil Fungal Networks

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We seek to appoint an enthusiastic postdoctoral research associate to work on a new project “SymbiOtIc soLutions for HEalthy Agricultural Landscapes (SOIL-HEAL)” funded for 36 months by BBSRC as part of the European Joint Programme on Soils. The overall goal of SOIL-HEAL is to realise the potential of symbiotic soil fungi for sustainable agriculture to foster holistic and sustainable agricultural soil management practices. Most plants have coevolved with soil fungi to form root-fungal (“mycorrhizal”) symbioses that are critical for regulating numerous ecosystem functions and services in natural and agricultural settings. An important feature of mycorrhizal fungi is their ability to form ‘networks’, which comprise three distinct elements: extra-radical mycelium, common mycorrhizal networks (CMNs), where a fungus links two or more plants, and community-level ‘interaction networks’ between and among mycorrhizal plant and fungal species.

19. Research Associate in Early Lung Cancer Biology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Lung cancer is the largest cause of cancer related death in the world, due to late diagnosis. This project will develop a novel platform to discover biomarkers for the earliest stages of lung cancer. We will test the hypothesis that there is a detectable change in immune cells when they interact with cancer cells for the first time. Given that multiple immune cells can interact with each cancer cell, a signal associated with cancer will be amplified allowing detection when cancer burden is low. Such a biomarker for early disease would prove invaluable for identifying lung cancer at a time when curative treatment can be offered.

20. Research Associate in Distribution Network Modelling and Analysis

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Power and Energy Division of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Manchester, Manchester, UK is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the development and implementation of a probabilistic, artificial neural networks based methodology for modelling demand-side flexibility in distribution networks. The methodology will serve to represent demand flexibility coming from a large number of residential and small and medium-size commercial end-users. The resulting model will be applicable to the flexibility procurer, quantifying the amount of available capacity in the presence of uncertainties. Such a comprehensive flexibility model can inform demand response (DR) programmes at the distribution level, facilitating more confident planning of the DR outcome, and scheduling demand manipulation in an optimal way. This research will contribute to more flexible operation of the distributing network by assessing the time varying capacity available from flexible loads, in response to flexible services currently procured by the DNOs.
