28. Postdoctoral Research Fellow in bioinformatics/ statistics

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The researcher will be a main contributor to an EU-funded project on locally advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell cancer. Treatment for such cancers may be treatment with certain forms of chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy for larynx preservation as an alternative to total laryngectomy. The project aims to develop a multimodal signature predictive of response to therapy and to define alternative pathways to be tackled in patients not responding to the current treatment. The project will collect and integrate a large series of clinically annotated data from cancer patients after treatment, to assess a multi-omic signature of response to treatment and to define alternative pathways. Transcriptomic analysis, molecular data on cell lines and radiomic evaluation will be main components of the signature development. Model predictions of response for individual/groups of patients allowing in-silico simulations of treatment response by means of patient-based inference of tumor biology, in particular for response to therapy, by exploiting combined genomics and radiomics; and a new multifactorial AI algorithms informing personalized treatment based on patient’s profiles will be employed. Validation will take the form of a phase II pilot trial using the developed models and signatures.

7. Postdoctoral Fellow – clinical translation of cell-based therapy

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

In the project, you will work on a bleeding disorder called inherited factor (F) VII deficiency. FVII is a vital protein in the blood coagulation process and an inherited deficiency of this protein is caused by mutations in the F7 gene leading to severely reduced activity of the FVII protein in the blood. Clinically, these patients experience frequent and sometimes severe bleeding episodes, and the only treatment today is replacement therapy that is expensive and invasive. We are using CRISPR gene editing and advanced cell reprogramming techniques to correct the mutation in the patients’ own cells and establishing transplant procedures to restore FVII activity and function. Your role will be to transfer our protocols and procedures into a GMP-compliant setting and to ensure that the gene edited cells fulfill the requirements as Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs).

28. Researcher in Pharmacology and Microbiomics

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Drug treatment is the most common therapeutic intervention. However, there is large interindividual variability in drug response, affecting both efficacy and toxicity. Emerging evidence implies an extensive role of gut microbiota in determining the systemic exposure of drugs. However, despite their important consequences for human biology, the gut microbes’ involvement in drug metabolism and transport is poorly understood and data from human subjects are lacking. In this project, rich samples and clinical data from a previously conducted clinical trial designed to shed light on the impact of gut microbiota composition on key drug metabolizing enzymes and transporters will be utilized. The main objectives in the project are to investigate the impact of gut microbiota on drug disposition, i.e. key drug metabolizing enzymes and drug transporters, and to our ability to predict the effect of the host-microbiome interplay on an individual’s drug response using an integrated approach combining in vitro and clinical data with mechanistic modeling. Both local gastrointestinal and systemic effects of the microbiome on drug disposition will be investigated. The project will be performed in collaboration with University of Manchester (Professor Aleksandra Galetin) and University of Gothenburg (Professor Fredrik Bäckhed).

31. Researcher in Historic Epidemiology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The candidate will be working as a part of the Nordforsk funded project “Pathogens, Pandemics and the Development of Nordic Societies (NORDEMICS)”, which ties five universities in Scandinavia together into an interdisciplinary consortium, with 2 PhD students and 3 Postdocs/Researchers working within this project. Nordemics is dedicated to understanding how various societal and environmental factors influenced the dynamics of epidemic and pandemic infections in human populations. The PhDs and Postdocs/Researchers will have the opportunity to collaborate with each other and leverage the expertise of the NORDEMICS group as a whole into their own projects. At CEES, the appointed Researcher will aim to understand why plague disappeared from the Nordic countries during the 17th and 18th century. Many biological, social and economic reasons are offered for why plague disappeared from Europe, but none are conclusive. The rather unspecified “improved hygiene” hypothesis is often presented without considering contrary evidence, and the “displacement of the black rat reservoir by brown rats” hypothesis does not consider that plague thrived in locations outside Europe where brown rats dominated the local population of rats. More interesting are hypotheses that look at increases in regional temperature affecting flea- or lice-borne plague transmission, increased use of quarantines, and changes in the intensity of trade between the Nordic countries and other parts of Europe.

3. Postdoctoral Research Fellow in modelling of organoid/gastruloid morphogenesis

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

A three-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is available at The Njord Centre. The purpose of the possition is to develop a theoretical understanding and computational models of development principles in organoid/gastruloid morphogenesis. No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo. Starting date as soon as possible. The position is part of the UiO: Life Science convergence environment “Integrated technologies for tracking organoid/gastruloid morphogenesis” (ITOM). 4. Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Medieval History/Literature

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The postdoctoral fellow will principally be expected to extend the transhistorical dimension of the project, by pursuing research related to the narrative hierarchies of a non-Byzantine medieval historical tradition. Researchers are expected to share their chronological focus with the project (c. 1200 – c. 1460), but their field of specialisation within medieval history/literature is entirely open. The postdoctoral fellow’s primary responsibility will be to research and write at least two journal articles. Prospective candidates are asked to clearly articulate the topics on which they intend to work in their project description. Candidates will not be expected to apply a rigid ‘project methodology’, but are encouraged to elaborate how their proposed research speaks to the research questions and transhistorical agenda of the project. Proposals should explicitly relate to questions of narrative/narrative theory, gender, hierarchies, subalternity, or non-elite counterpower.

9. Postdoctoral Research Fellow in comparative immunology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The position is associated with the Comparative Immunology Group in the Section of Physiology at IBV. The group works closely with scientists in the Department of Immunology, Oslo University Hospital – Rikshospitalet, Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and at the Centre of Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) at IBV, and seeks to understand host responses and protective immunity in vertebrates with “unusual” immunogenomes. While the adaptive immune system encompassing B cells, T cells and MHC class I and class II loci is shared among all jawed vertebrates, Atlantic cod and other codfishes specifically lost the MHC class II locus and CD4+ T cells approximately 100 mya. In other vertebrates (including most other fishes), the MHC II – CD4 axis is required for strong antibody responses and vaccine efficacy. Recently, whole genome sequencing has added more teleosts to the list of vertebrates with unusual immunogenomes.

10. Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Cancer Cell Biology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The candidate for this position will work on a project funded by the Norwegian Cancer Society. In this project, we aim to unravel the role of the endoplasmic reticulum-focal adhesions contact sites in transducing external cues to the nucleus, leading to altered gene expression, and how this is coupled with the development of the cancer cell invasive ability during cancer progression. To achieve this, the project will make use of RNAi screens and advanced imaging techniques such as super-resolution and live imaging. Our group has access to the National imaging platform NorMIC Oslo, with a wide range of state-of-the-art imaging equipment. The Department of Biosciences harbors also an EM-lab, the Norwegian Sequencing Centre (NSC) and Proteomics services.
