1. PhD Position in education with research focus on special education
Summary of PhD Program:
The successful applicant will get a four-year employment as doctoral candidate and engage in doctoral studies at the Department and Education and Special Education. In collaboration with the supervisors, the doctoral candidate will formulate and accomplish a doctoral thesis (155 higher education credit points) as well as take courses at doctoral level (85 higher education credit points) in accordance with both a general and an individual study plan. During the doctoral period, the dissertation will be presented and discussed in seminars with invited discussants on at least three occasions. The doctoral student will be a member of a research environment at the Department and divisions.

2. PhD Position in Medical Science – Oxytocin and social behavior in zebrafish
Summary of PhD Program:
Autism spectrum disorders are characterized by problems with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors. Unfortunately, there is no effective treatment for these core symptoms. The neuropeptide oxytocin affects social behaviors in many species and it has been suggested that endogenous oxytocin may play a role in the pathophysiology of autism. Furthermore, oxytocin treatment appears to alleviate autism symptoms by increasing individuals’ social attention. The neurobiological mechanisms behind oxytocin’s effects on social interactions remain to be investigated in experimental animal models. In recent years, the research group has established behavioral models and neuroanatomical methods with which we study neuroanatomy, neuronal activity and social behavior in zebrafish. The current project aims to understand how oxytocin and other molecules influence social behaviors in zebrafish.

The PhD will focus on the interactions between herbivores, vegetation and climate. The project will focus on quantifying the importance of herbivory on vegetation structure under natural conditions and the potential for this herbivory driven vegetation changes to influence global climate. The project will consist of programming and data mining with a main focus on integrating herbivory into dynamic vegetation modeling. The successful candidate will have Søren Faurby as the main supervisor with Thomas Hickler (Senckenberg Research Institute) and Paul Miller (Lund University) as co-supervisors.

4. PhD Position in Odontological Science – Immune reactions in oral cancer
Summary of PhD Program:
Our adaptive and innate immunity constitute a broad defense against cancer with cytotoxic lymphocytes as key players. However, cytotoxic cells are sensitive to immune suppressive factors released by malignant and non-malignant cells in the microenvironment. The oral cavity is a very complex milieu, and even more so during malignancies and pre-malignant states. What decides if a pre-malignant state will remain benign or develop into oral cancer, is yet to be found. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the functions of cytotoxic cells in oral cancers and in pre-malignant states and how these cells are affected by other immune cells in the vicinity. The project is based on experimental in vitro research with focus on the functions and survival of human immune cells from healthy individuals or individuals with premalignant- or malignant conditions.

Summary of PhD Program:
Mitochondria convert chemical energy into ATP by utilizing a system of molecular machines, the respiratory chain complexes. The complexes driving oxidative phosphorylation are a mosaic of proteins encoded by the nuclear and the mitochondrial DNA. Therefore, assembly of the respiratory chain and the ATPase requires not only expression and import of many nuclear encoded proteins but also translation of mitochondrially encoded proteins. The mitochondrial genetic system is responsible for replication and transcription of the mitochondrial genome and for the synthesis of a few polypeptides within the organelle.
