6. PhD Position in Climate Dynamics
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project will focus on the effects of climate components on deep warming of the Arctic troposphere. Specifically, the PhD will study the climate impacts of vanishing summer-to-autumn Arctic sea ice in the 21st century as the Arctic Ocean enters an ‘ice-free’ state, elucidating the large-scale and synoptic scale mechanisms at play. The role of ocean temperatures versus sea ice will be investigated, including which dominates to impact the climate as the world continues to warm. The PhD project will rely on the analysis of available observations, reanalysis data, large ensemble simulations from climate models and numerical simulations to generate new knowledge on the mechanisms contributing to high-latitude warming and the global impacts of the new Arctic.

The project will explore cases of automation with an emphasis on relational, spatial and socio-cultural dynamics of human-machine interaction; looking at initiatives by the industry, legislation, and responses by seafarers and society; as well as the changing roles and relations of seafarers, managers, and technicians. Through ethnographic studies on board on ships, on land during simulation trainings, in headquarters and control rooms, and in community settings in Norway and beyond, the project will examine changes of work relations, risk assessment, and ways of relating to the ocean through new technologies.
