Summary of Doctoral Project:
We are looking for smart and motivated person to work on multiport modular power electronics converter design for grid applications. The application of multiport converters in grid applications can be integrating multiple energy resources (such as combination of PV, fuel cell, wind and storage systems) into the AC grid and/or supplying AC/DC loads. The need for such converters will be increased in the future hybrid AC/DC distribution network. Another important application could be power electronics based solid state transformer (SST) to be replaced with traditional transformers. The challenges here are to improve the efficiency and tackle the reliability and life-time issues comparing the SSTs with traditional transformers. Applicants are invited to select either direction in their application.

3. Two Doctoral Researcher (Embedded Device Friendly Machine Learning Methods for the Security, Privacy-Preserving of Distributed Data)
Summary of Doctoral Project:
With the overall general tendency of population ageing and simultaneous shortage of personnel in the healthcare sector, the use of various types of sensors in residential environments for modelling resident activity and consequently inferring potential health or wellbeing issues of residents has been studied widely. Successful modelling and detection of resident activities can reveal information related to active and rest periods, walking patterns, possible hand/arm tremor and body gestures that can be signals of chronical medical conditions such as depression, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, dementia and so forth. Despite the promise of improving wellbeing, the use of residential sensor data for healthcare purposes also raises serious concerns related to privacy and data security due to the use of imaging, voice recording, potential security compromises of data centres and inference attacks. Also, misdiagnosis caused by false detections or inaccurate models is a concern when relying on automated sensing for healthcare.

6. Doctoral Researcher (Structural Mechanics, Tribology and Machine Elements)
Summary of Doctoral Project:
Structural mechanics research group at the Faculty of Built Environment is led by Prof. Reijo Kouhia. The research themes cover broadly many areas of applied mechanics, especially materials and fatigue modelling. In addition development of numerical methods to solve these problems is a part of our research themes. Tribology and Machine Elements group at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences is led by Prof. Arto Lehtovaara and is part of the Unit of Materials Science and Environmental Engineering. Our research group concentrates on dry and lubricated contacts (friction, wear and lubrication), performance and service life of machine elements as well as monitoring and diagnostics of machine systems.
