3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Natural Sciences, specializing in Physical Geography

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to determine the utility of newly available hyperspectral satellite data to better understand and quantify biochemical and biophysical properties of tundra vegetation negatively impacted by changing climatic conditions. The study areas will be located in the Swedish tundra area. Research questions to be addressed are, for example, can biochemical and biophysical properties of tundra vegetation associated with a drier and warmer climate be detected using hyperspectral satellite data? Can hyperspectral satellite data be used to detect tundra plant diversity? Is there a benefit to synergistic use of hyperspectral data from, for example, the EnMAP satellite together with Sentinel-2 data?

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Psychology

Summary of PhD Program:

As a doctoral student, you will be part of the research group Criminal, Legal, and Investigative Psychology (CLIP). The research that you will conduct, within the framework of the research program, will focus on the advantages and disadvantages of taking oral evidence, such as testimony, early in the legal process. The research work will consist of planning, conducting, and analyzing the results of primarily quantitative studies. You will also write scientific articles on collected material and take courses within the framework of the doctoral program. The work requires a good ability to plan, analyze, work independently, and collaborate in groups. Another important part of the work is to communicate with various legal actors, as well as international researchers. Strong proficiency with English (both spoken and written) is therefore required.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Science – Data-driven life science (DDLS)

Summary of PhD Program:

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Ischemic stroke is heterogeneous both in terms of etiology and outcomes. Recurrent strokes are common and have higher fatality and disability rates compared to first strokes. Thus, improved secondary prevention is greatly needed. However, many of the molecular mechanisms underlying stroke recurrence and poor outcomes remain unknown. The overarching aim of this Data Driven Life Science PhD project is to use artificial intelligence (AI) approaches, specifically deep and machine learning (ML), to improve mechanistic understanding and enhance prediction of ischemic stroke outcomes. In the long run, this project will contribute to the development of precision medicine for stroke.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Science – Regional differences in gestational duration

Summary of PhD Program:

The purpose of the project is to deepen knowledge about geographical differences regarding pregnancy length and investigate its causes. Data will primarily come from the Medical Birth Register, relevant quality registers, and SCB’s population register. By using machine learning and spatial analysis methods, we will investigate the effect of various sociodemographic and contextual risk factors; both individually and in different combinations. Furthermore, it will be investigated how these factors affect pregnancy length in different parts of the country. This is to understand causal relationships and develop possible interventions. By evaluating the generalizability of the results outside Sweden, the project can also contribute to a global reduction of premature births and thus promote equality in maternal and child health.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Science – New MR-diagnostics för spinal cord involvement

Summary of PhD Program:

Spinal Cord Compression (SCC) due to cancer is a feared complication due to its potential for severe pain and permanent neurological deficits.
Aim: To improve the diagnosis and treatment follow-up of children with SCC due to cancer using new diffusion weighted (DWI) and tensor imaging (DTI) methods. This may lead to better surgical resection and spare surrounding, healthy tissue during radiotherapy.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Marine Biogeochemistry focusing on how Blue Growth sectors will influence greenhouse gas fluxes

Summary of PhD Program:

The ocean is one of the most quickly changing regions globally. The blue growth wants to promote and prioritize the expansion of marine economy sectors such as marine industrial activities, sustainable energy, marine tourism, fisheries, and aquaculture. For example, aquaculture is the fastest growing food sector currently and feeds more than half of the world’s population with marine products. Along with these massive growths, investigating marine biogeochemical cycles in affected regions is crucial for understanding current and projected carbon and nitrogen budgets.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Oceanography

Summary of PhD Program:

We seek a PhD candidate in Physical Oceanography to address knowledge gaps related to fine-scale ocean features/variability to understand mixed layer dynamics, vertical mixing and ventilation pathways, and water mass transformation in the upper ocean spanning the Southern Ocean and South Atlantic. These processes may also be related to heat and carbon fluxes across the air-sea interface, and beyond the base of the mixed layer. The candidate has the flexibility to investigate one to several of these processes. The candidate may use a combination of existing field data (primarily from autonomous platforms from multiple Southern Ocean deployments), new observations (planned expeditions in 2025 & 2026), as well as existing and new model simulations. Auxiliary reanalysis data and satellite-based products, including recently attained SWOT and PACE satellite data, are available to be used.
