1. Two PhD Scholarships at the SDU Centre for Business History
Summary of PhD Program:
Department of History at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for two PhD scholarships at the SDU Centre for Business History, beginning on February 1, 2023. The SDU Centre for Business History is a research center established by the University of Southern Denmark and the Danish Museum of Industry. Researchers in the center specialize in Danish business history since the 19th century, and we have a special interest in understanding the complex histories behind the wide variety of strongholds in the Danish business system in the context of globalization and Europeanization: How were these strongholds developed in interaction with the surrounding society, and what are the characteristics of that form of capitalism that came to be the economic foundation for the welfare states in Denmark and Northern Europe?

2. PhD Position in Mechanical Engineering – Maritime Technology
Summary of PhD Program:
The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a fully-funded 3-year PhD position in mechanical engineering located in Odense, Denmark with a preferred starting date of February 1st, 2023, or soon thereafter. The PhD position is funded by SDU Maritime Research Platform, which was established in 2022 based on a donation from A/S Dampskibsselskabet Orient’s Fond. The platform consists of maritime research projects in four faculties across the University of Southern Denmark, mostly PhD and postdoc projects. All work packages in the project are related to the maritime sector with a special focus at the offshore industry. The work packages, though separate in their research focus, are interconnected and important to the project, as the breadth and interdisciplinarity of the initiative is very important.

4. PhD Position in Sports Science
Summary of PhD Program:
The overall aim of the Generation Healthy Kids (GHK) Intervention Program is to promote healthy weight and wellbeing in school-aged children (6-11 years, 1st to 3rd grade). The program combines a randomized controlled trial targeting several important risk factors for excessive weight gain with systems approaches. Co-creation processes is merged with systems thinking to take the complexity of childhood into account and support long-term sustainability of the developed program. GHK will contain intervention components on balanced diet, physical activity, healthy sleep and screen media use. There will be a strong focus on empowering involved children and families and at the same time reduce obesogenic risk factors in the environment, together with capacity building at community levels.

6. PhD Position in Soft Robotic Tactile Perception
Summary of PhD Program:
Unlike humans that rely primarily on vision, Nature has developed versatile sensing modalities such as auditory and touch to perceive shapes and interact with complex environments. This project draws inspiration from the active touch sensing of Nature’s tactile specialists to develop a sensate soft robot that can infer tactile information through a sequence of exploratory movements. The result of this project equips the skin of soft robots with rich tactile sensing capabilities that can improve their functionality in manipulation, locomotion, and collaborative tasks. This project requires system-level development of hardware and software to integrate actuation, sensing, control, and learning in a unified soft robotic system.

8. PhD Position in Smart Manufacturing / Industry 4.0 for Power-to-X equipment production
Summary of PhD Program:
There is a double urgency to transform Europe’s energy system: ending the dependence on fossil fuels and tackling the climate crisis. Green PtX solutions are seen as a cornerstone of Europe’s green transition and as main building block for reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. The PhD candidate will work actively in the project “Green H2 and MeOH in DK – realizing cost leadership and scalability (GREMEOH)” funded by Innovation Fund Denmark’s InnoMission2 Partnership. The aim of the GREMEOH project is to bring Denmark and EU a step closer to leveling the cost of green hydrogen and methanol to fossil parity to serve a rapid increase in demand for these green fuels. The accelerate cost-efficient scaling of manufacturing and assembly of H2O-electrolysis and H2- and CO2-based methanol processing units is a key building block of the GREMEOH project. The PhD project will focus on scaling up the smart manufacturing and assembly of green PtX production units, i.e., electrolysers for the green hydrogen production and H2- and CO2-based methanol processing units.
