1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Consumer Behaviour in the Context of Reusable Packaging

Summary of PhD Program:

The Marketing and Consumer Behaviour group at Wageningen University and Research is looking for a PhD candidate in the area of consumer behaviour change, in the context of reusable packaging. This PhD project is part of the NWO funded project Re2Pack. Reusable packaging systems (RPS) have promising environmental benefits compared to single-use packaging, yet have been subject to less integrated attention in science and society, potentially due to the complexity of the required system change. To address this, the project Re2Pack takes an interdisciplinary approach focused on value chains, consumer behaviour, and packaging design, to introduce sustainable RPS.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Addressing the consumer side in the move towards a repair economy for electronic products

Summary of PhD Program:

Have you ever wondered why consumers tend to replace their electronic devices instead of repairing them? Are you motivated to delve into the psychological processes underlying consumers’ decisions regarding the repair (or not) of their owned products? Are you enthusiastic about developing and empirically testing innovative (marketing) ways to motivate consumers towards repair? If so, then we have the perfect opportunity for you!

The Marketing and Consumer Behaviour group of Wageningen University is looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious PhD candidate to fulfil an essential position in the NWO funded project “Tackling fixophobia: Improving repair practices for consumer electronics”. The project aims to develop a circular economy for consumer electronics.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Salt marsh survival

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project takes up the challenge to simulate and predict salt marsh development governed by changing marine conditions and human influence, and, ultimately, to determine prerequisites for salt marsh survival and the resulting coastal protection. The PhD project is co-financed by the NWO-VICI project “Deltas out of shape: regime changes of sediment dynamics in tide-influenced deltas” and the NWO-Perspective programme “Wadden Sea and Estuaries: system Dynamics and sediment management under climate change” (WadSED).

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in decision support system for designing transition pathways towards circular hospitals

Summary of PhD Program:

Hospitals are responsible for keeping local people healthy, but unfortunately this is fulfilled at a cost of environmental impact and hazards beyond the hospital. Their current operation and resource management practice result in excessive use of raw materials, generation of waste(water), and induces greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental hazards in the associated medical supply chain around the world. In The Netherlands, the health care sector is accounted for 7% of national emissions and 13% of national footprint of material extraction.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Evaluation of restoration measures for fish in the River Meuse

Summary of PhD Program:

Within this project the focus will be on the fish community, especially on species that prefer flowing waters (rheophilic species). One aim is to identify bottlenecks in the life cycle of these species, which requires monitoring of the occurrence of fishes in relation to habitat characteristics. Where possible a BACI (before-after-impact-control) approach will be applied.

Within this project, you will work as a PhD student on developing new knowledge on the interactions between connectivity, quality and quantity of habitats for rheophilic fishes using proven and newly developed techniques, such as fyke monitoring, acoustic telemetry and mapping habitat conditions.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in multi-breed multi-trait beef cattle international genomic evaluations for novel traits and small populations

Summary of PhD Program:

Are you looking for a PhD and interested in quantitative genomics? Do you want to develop innovative international genomic evaluations for sustainable beef cattle breeding using multi-country datasets? Then, this PhD vacancy may be of interest to you.

The Animal Breeding and Genomics group at Wageningen University is looking for a PhD to take part in the PPP project “Towards multi-breed multi-trait beef cattle international genomic evaluations for novel traits and small populations”, a collaboration with ICAR (the Netherlands), SLU and Interbull Centre (Sweden), AHDB and SRUC (United Kingdom), ICBF (Ireland), and FedANA (Italy), and co-founded by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Synthetic Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

Living cells exhibit extensive sub-compartmentalization to regulate and communicate between thousands of interconnected biochemical reactions taking place within the cytoplasm. Along with well-known membrane-bound compartments, phase-separated membraneless organelles have been identified in recent years to play an equally important role in these processes. In this project, we will utilize coacervate-based strategy to form communicative membraneless compartments within cell-mimicking vesicles, with each of the compartments acting as distinct functional biochemical units. Being able to maintain distinct reaction hubs within vesicles will constitute an important step towards building intracellular communication networks.

8. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Scaling Circular Consumption: Sharing and repairing in everyday urban life

Summary of PhD Program:

The Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University is seeking two highly motivated PhD candidates to join a dynamic research team focused on advancing circular sharing and repairing practices in the Netherlands. The PhD projects form part of the NWO funded project ShaRepair, which is aimed at embedding sustainable sharing and repairing practices into daily urban life. Despite their potential for realising circular economy ambitions, sharing and repairing of consumer goods, such as electric appliances, furniture, and clothing, remain marginal in Dutch society, with challenges in participation and scaling across diverse communities.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in global carbon cycle and wildfire emissions

Summary of PhD Program:

Landscape fires emit CO2 emissions roughly equivalent to 30% of global fossil fuel emissions. Their frequency and intensity is rapidly changing due to land use change and climate change, but exactly how is not well known. These fires impact air quality and climate, and sometimes lead to permanent forest loss. Over the last years major improvements have been made in how well we can detect these fires on a global scale, and also the degree to which forests are changing is now better known thanks to new and exciting satellite missions.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Contested Landscapes

Summary of PhD Program:

Political ecologists highlight how industrial-capitalism, and its view of nature as separate from humanity, threaten the viability of life on the planet and disproportionately affect people and populations with long histories of colonial exploitation and violence. Anthropologists often reaffirm these findings. However, they also demonstrate possibilities for (everyday) resistance including the adaptability of longstanding, often environmentally more sustainable socio-ecological, economic and cultural practices and values.
