You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team (including engineers, environmental scientists, and data scientists) developing samplers that will enable governmental bodies to monitor organic pollutants (pesticides, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals etc) at much lower cost and greater detail. You will be based at Southampton’s Highfield Campus as part of the School of Engineering – one of the country’s foremost centres for engineering research (ranked 4th in the most recent REF). You will have access to a range of 3D printing facilities, traditional engineering workshops, electronics workshops, mechanical testing facilities, and water tanks for testing that support the development of cutting-edge new technology. In addition to the sampler development and lab-testing you will work closely with collaborators from the University of Portsmouth in the field-testing of the technology at existing test sites.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) are effective treatments for cancer, albeit with considerable potential for further improvement. The Antibody and Vaccine Group based in the Centre for Cancer Immunology in Southampton has a strong track-record in basic and translational immunology relating to developing therapeutic mAb for clinical examination. Over the last decade they have begun to better appreciate the role of myeloid cells in determining the efficacy of antibody therapeutics
Now, in collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim they are beginning a new project aimed at targeting these myeloid cells to overcome immune suppression and elicit better therapy. Profs Mark Cragg and Stephen Beers, alongside Dr Stephen Thirdborough, aim to leverage the significant antibody capabilities and expertise at Boehringer to develop new and more effective antibody reagents for cancer patients. The current opportunity is for a research fellow to join the team to help discover and augment mAb capable of manipulating myeloid cells to elicit powerful anti-tumour responses, with the potential for the discovery of novel anti-cancer therapeutics.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of researchers in the Astronomy Group at the University of Southampton, working towards delivering new science with the state-of-the-art Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space Time (LSST) and the Time Domain Extragalactic Survey (TiDES) running on the 4MOST spectroscopic experiment. LSST will be the largest and most comprehensive ground-based optical survey ever undertaken, delivering millions of astrophysics transients, while TiDES provides 250,000 fibre hours of dedicated transient and host galaxy spectroscopy. Together, these projects open up a vast new discovery space in the study of supernovae and transients, and their application in cosmological settings.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Iceland is underlain by a plume in the mantle, with past fluctuations in melt production recorded as a series of V-shaped ridges and troughs in the north Atlantic. This project will test the hypothesis that the fluctuations in melt production are primarily caused by changes in the temperature of the mantle plume. We will collect seismic profiles on board the R/V Marcus G Langseth in late summer 2024, along both the Reykjanes Ridge south of Iceland, and a flowline that crosses the ridge. This will include 150 OBS stations and a multichannel seismic reflection profile using a streamer up to 15km in length, to measure variations in the crustal thickness and the crustal velocity structure. The flowline also crosses several existing IODP Sites where the composition of the upper igneous crust has been sampled. This unique combination of datasets will allow us to test whether the V-shaped ridges really do represent changes in mantle temperature within the plume.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The Research Fellow will work with Prof Cortese on an NHIR funded project (PI: Prof Rubia, King’s College London, KCL) on an exciting project funded by the NIHR testing a novel non-pharmacological brain stimulation therapy for ADHD approved by the FDA and CE. The therapy is based on the stimulation of the trigeminal nerve (TNS) which has shown to improve ADHD symptoms in a proof-of-concept trial in the USA. This study will test the novel neurotherapy for ADHD in a larger, multicentre, randomised controlled trial (RCT) in 150 children and adolescents with ADHD at KCL and Southampton University.
The Research Fellow will assist the post-doctoral Research Fellow with the last months of recruitment and assessment for the project as well as writing up of the papers. The candidate will have a PhD* or have submitted their thesis in psychology, neuropsychology, biology, medicine, or related fields and show evidence of working independently, excellent organisation skills, team-work abilities and writing skills. It would be an advantage if the Research Fellow has knowledge of ADHD or other mental health disorders, and experience of recruitment, of working with children and adolescents, and of conducting research assessments including clinical questionnaires, neurocognitive testing, and IQ assessments.
