1. Two postdoc positions (3 years) focusing on plant and microbial carbon and nitrogen cycling in the Arctic

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The positions are part of a large interdisciplinary project (https://kaw.wallenberg.org/en/research/winter-studies-arctic-yield-new-insights-greenhouse-gas-emissions) that aims to understand and quantify how processes during the arctic winter may be decisive for overall feedbacks from arctic tundra to the global climate. Arctic ecosystems store large amounts of organic carbon in plants and soil. Uptake of carbon by arctic plants is strongly limited by their access to nutrients, especially nitrogen, due to competition by microbes. Year-round carbon and nitrogen balances thus depend on the seasonality of the activities of plant and microbial communities, and their synchronization. In the Arctic, climate change is especially pronounced during autumn, winter and spring, which may cause asynchronies of these processes, leading to increased carbon and nitrogen losses and positive climate feedbacks.

2. Post doctor in NMR-based structural biology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

This postdoctoral position is part of a Swedish council financed research project to unravel the regulation of programmed cell death at the molecular level with focus on the structure of the proteins and biological membranes involved in this important process. Important key players in the mitochondrial (intrinsic) cell death pathway are membrane-active proteins of the Bcl-2 family. The main objective of this project is to understand the function – and underlying structural properties – of these proteins and their interactions with the mitochondrial membrane environment. For this purpose we will use structural biological methods focusing on solid-state NMR spectroscopy of lipid-protein complexes, complemented by liquid-state NMR. In addition, we will also use neutron reflectometry on these lipid protein complexes). You will primarily study the membrane bound Bcl-2 proteins and their mutual interactions. In addition, you will also be supporting NMR based work on human protein kinases which can be involved in human cancer, in part, through their regulation of Bcl-2 proteins.

4. Postdoctoral position (2 years) in Aquatic Ecology – Environmental drivers of fish top consumer growth, production and size structure

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the international research project “Holistic evaluation and restoration measures of human impacts on freshwater ecosystems across biogeographical gradients (FreshRestore)”, co-funded by the European Commission (https://www.biodiversa.org/1587) and Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Globally, lake ecosystems are under anthropogenic stress (e.g. climate change, land use and fishing). A key challenge is to understand and predict how freshwaters over gradients of catchments respond to different stressors, and to gain knowledge how to preserve and restore these ecosystems. FreshRestore will develop integrative models to predict population and food web levels consequences of natural environmental drivers and anthropogenic stressors using ecological population- and statistical models and large data sets of lake abiotic parameters, fish communities and food webs across biogeographical gradients in Fennoscandia, combined with information on climate, land- and water-use, and mitigation efforts (e.g., habitat restorations).

5. Postdoctoral position in molecular microbiology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The postdoc will perform studies in the laboratory of Prof Maria Fällman who study molecular mechanisms in bacterial gastrointestinal pathogens important for the ability of these pathogens to establish and maintain persistent infections using Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium as model pathogen. Work responsibilities: The postdoc project involves studies of S. Typhimurium in vivo gene expression in infected tissue and aims at identifying bacterial components that are critical for the bacteria to establish and maintain long term infections. The methodologies employed are classical microbiology and molecular biology techniques, mouse infection experiments, RNA-Taqseq with associated bioinformatic analyses including modern methods for network-based machine learning.

6. Postdoctoral position in a project on Cancer Biology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The project is part of a multidisciplinary collaboration between four research groups that aims to understand at the molecular level how two kinases control tumor progression and metastasis of prostate cancer. The project includes investigating how the Transforming Growth Factor β Type I receptor (TβRI) and Aurora kinase B (AURKB) interact during cell division in cancer cells. The significance of these kinases for tumor growth in preclinical and clinical cancer models, will be studied. The project is translational and includes studies of recombinant proteins using structural biology, in vitro cell cultures using preclinical cancer models, real-time imaging using Sartorius IncuCyte S5 technology, artificial intelligence and data-driven life science, confocal microscopy and studies in human tumor materials. The project aims to develop better predictive biomarkers for early detection of advanced prostate cancer but also to develop improved treatment strategies for aggressive prostate cancer.

8. Postdoc, Business Administration, Artificial Intelligence, extreme context.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The postdoc position is based at the Department of Business administration, specifically at the management section and the research environment “Extreme Environments – Everyday Decisions (www.TripleED.com)”. We offer an interdisciplinary, internationally competitive research environment interested in extreme contexts – settings where people risk getting hurt or killed (see Hällgren et al, 2018 for a more precise definition and description). More precisely, TripleED explores organizational routines, leadership, and group and organizing processes in such settings. Examples of research projects in which an applicant may contribute include but are not limited to the response to Covid-19 among organizations critical to society’s resilience, decision making in avalanche terrain, commercialization of risk in extreme sports, and behaviors in Doomsday scenarios. A common denominator across the projects is a context-sensitivity to the phenomena that is researched.

11. Post doctor in machine learning for single-cell data analysis

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Gene isoforms play key roles in disease etiology and outcome. Despite that gene isoforms are involved in most biological processes, they are commonly ignored because we lack tools to understand them. In this project we will build new large-scale machine learning tools to extract gene isoform information from commonly existing single-cell RNA-seq data. The approach we consider is based on variational autoencoders and sequence models. The challenges lie in the data being extremely large, sparse, and noisy. The project will open doors into the currently most rapidly expanding field in biology. You will carry out formulation, implementation and testing of machine learning approaches to model and understand single-cell RNAseq data. You will present your findings, write manuscripts, help supervising students, and actively contribute to a collegial lab culture.
