1. Interdisciplinary PhD position in iPSC modeling of human neurodevelopmental disorders

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In the framework of an Innosuisse project involving industry research partners, you will characterize 2D and 3D iPSC-derived human cellular models of Rett and dup15q syndrome using high-throughput large-scale electrophysiology, patch-clamping and single-cell genomic methods – and probe a phenotype rescue using pharmacological and gene-therapeutic interventions. You will perform extracellular high-density microelectrode-array recordings to study the development of neuronal networks derived from patients and matched healthy controls. Besides electrophysiological microelectrode-array recordings, several other methods, such as immunohistochemistry, confocal imaging, and patch-clamp measurements will be used to functionally characterize individual neurons and their contribution to network activity in 2D and 3D.

2. PhD Position: Education, Econometrics and Immigrant Integration

Summary of Doctoral Project:

As a result of sharp increases in the age-dependency ratio and declining fertility rates in Europe, an influx of immigrants is expected in the following decades to sustain long-run economic growth. According to projections from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office for example, foreign immigrants are expected to account for more than 80% of Switzerland’s population increase over the next 30 years, with other EU countries like Germany and France following the same trend (Kohli et al., 2020). Yet, few countries in the EU have been successful in economically integrating migrants into the society.

3. PhD position in computational and theoretical earthquake physics with emphasis on induced seismicity and fluid-fault interactions

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Fluid injection into the Earth’s crust has become increasingly important in many applications, such as geothermal exploration, carbon capture and storage, and waste-water disposal. Thus understanding how such fluid injection may interact with preexisting and potentially seismogenic faults is critical for the viability of such projects. Further, native fluids inside and surrounding faults have been found to play a critical role in earthquake nucleation, stability, and shear localization.

8. PhD in chemical admixture formulation for ultra-green concrete

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Chemical admixtures are organic compounds, which when added in small amounts in concrete can profoundly modify key properties such as rheology and hydration kinetics. While already playing an essential role around the world in modern concrete, they are called upon to play an even greater one in low-carbon concrete. The SNSF Ambizione project aims to develop novel admixture formulations to enable low-carbon cement incorporating high amounts of supplementary cementitious materials (>50%) to be used in low-binder concrete formulations, enabling substantial CO2 savings. Such binders may be referred to as ultra-green cement and are seen as representing alternatives that could be easily, rapidly and extensively taken up by industry.

9. PhD Position: Enzyme Design and Evolution

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The growing world population demands an ever-increasing supply of energy and food while soaring greenhouse gas emissions threaten the global climate putting human lives at risk. To fight these urgent challenges, the Bunzel group creates photocatalytic enzymes that harness sunlight for biosynthesis and energy production. We do so by endowing existing biocatalysts with photocatalytic activity using computational design. Subsequently, we submit our designer enzymes to directed evolution to improve photocatalysis by mutagenesis and selection. During your doctoral studies, you will engineer photovoltaic enzymes that power biohybrid solar cells. You will be a member of a vibrant research team that combines synthetic biology and photo-biocatalysis to create sustainable solutions for societal challenges such as energy production, food security, carbon capture, and solar fuel synthesis.

10. PhD position in Remote Sensing for the Monitoring of Forest Resources

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Forests provide numerous ecological, economic, and climatic benefits, yet they are highly vulnerable to climatic extremes. Active management of forest ecosystems for resilience and adaptation is crucial to ensure that forests can continue to provide these benefits. Forest monitoring – in particular tree species identification – is a fundamental building block to achieving these goals and enabling sustainable forest management. With the aim of developing the first automatic tree species detection model of its kind that can be applied across forest types, this multidisciplinary project will combine open-source aerial imagery, ground-truth data and terrestrial lidar data from Swiss-, European, and Global forests, with various deep learning methods. The automatic species detection will serve as a basis for improved inventory planning, for the planning of forest operations, and to ensure targeted management activities for more resilient forests.

11. PhD Position: Multi-Objective Design of Structural Materials by AI-based Structure-Property Inversion

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The design of lightweight and efficient machine components relies on the optimal placement of material for a given load case. In many real-world applications, the loads span multiple physical domains, including structural, thermal, fluid, and magnetic. Multi-material additive manufacturing provides the ability to locally vary the mechanical structure (e.g. lattices, topology optimization) and material properties within the component to achieve multiple design objectives. What is lacking is a set of tools that leverage this capability and can apply it to the optimization of parts. To accomplish this task, we seek a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate who will support us to develop new and to extend existing design tools to design multi-material components satisfying multiple physical objectives.

12. PhD position in ab initio electronic transport simulations

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Semiconductor microprocessors build the core of all electronic devices, from laptops, cell phones, or tablets to vehicles and automated systems. Besides the end of Moore’s scaling law, the development of future chips face other challenges such as the introduction of new functionalities to devices whose dimensions do not exceed few nanometers. For example, ultra-scaled transistors, the active components of all microprocessors, might soon be combined with photo-emitters, modulators, and receivers to enable optical communication within or between chips. Nanoscale thermoelectric generators and coolers could also come into play to either recycle part of the heat dissipated by the chips or to remove it from their active area.
