3. PhD or PostDoc Position (100 %, TVL-E 13) on “Graph Data Systems” at TUM Campus Heilbronn

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Graphs are a fundamental data structure and are commonly used to model relationships between data points such as links between web pages or friendships between users in a social network. Due to the large variety in data science tasks performed with graph-structured data, different specialized systems have been developed, such as graph processing frameworks, graph databases, graph learning frameworks, knowledge graph systems, and graph mining systems. While each of them is specialized on a specific type of task and is highly efficient for it, maintaining and integrating a zoo of graph data systems is a huge challenge and leaves a lot of room for optimizations. Our vision is to explore opportunities to unify core parts of the different types of systems and develop a core graph data system that can serve as a common building block. This way, redundancies in keeping multiple cop-ies of graph data in different systems could be reduced, maintenance of the systems could be improved, and operational costs could be optimized. To perform this exciting research, we are looking for a highly motivated student or PostDoc who has recently finished his/her Master’s degree or PhD degree in computer science.

8. PhD student (m/f/d) at the Chair of Nutrition and Immunology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We are currently seeking a motivated and talented scientist to join our team as PhD student at the Chair of Nutrition and Immunology, headed by Prof. Dr. Dirk Haller. The incidence of immune-mediated and metabolism-related chronic diseases like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC) have dramatically been increasing over the past decades in industrialized countries. In IBD, the intestinal epithelium is challenged by repetitive cycles of wounding and subsequent healing processes due to recurrent inflammatory episodes, and the number and duration of inflammatory insults is associated with an increased risk of developing CRC. The control of healing processes is critical to disease progression and involves luminal (microbiome, diet) factors and immune mediated signals. The metabolism of intestinal epithelial cells is a target of these signals and is a determinant of cellular functions. The identification of disease-associated nutritional and microbial factors and the disease-relevant cellular targets underlying healing responses and inflammation is a major scientific focus of the Chair of Nutrition and Immunology.

13. PhD Position for Automatic Testing of Autonomous Vehicles

Summary of Doctoral Project:

It is apparent that one cannot rely solely on physical test drives for ensuring the correct functionality of autonomous vehicles. Since physical test drives are costly and time-consuming, it is advantageous to accompany them with computer simulations. However, since most traffic scenarios are not challenging, even simulations are often too time-consuming. The goal of this project is to provide methods and tools for automatically synthesizing challenging test cases for motion planning of autonomous vehicles. This can be seen as a driving test for motion planning algorithms that needs to be passed in order to be used in real vehicles. To solve this problem, we propose an approach that creates automatically critical driving situations, i.e., situations with a small solution space for avoiding traffic rule violations and collisions. Our approach combines reachability analysis for determining the size of the solution space with optimization techniques to shrink it. The solution space is reduced by shifting the initial states of traffic participants as well as their inputs over time, demanding an immediate and correct action of the vehicle under test.

15. PhD in Vascular Physics

Summary of Doctoral Project:

From animals’ circulatory system to random porous media in fuel cells, morphological network adaptation is crucial for optimal perfusion. In self-organizing life forms, network morphology constantly adapts in response to environmental stimuli towards more homogeneous distribu-tion of flow transported nutrients. Combining micro-fluidic techniques and 3D cell culture, you will grow human microvascular tissue on chip whose morphology self-organizes in response to vasoactive sub-stances. Your work will lead the way to applications of flow-adapted on-chip vascular networks to optimally perfuse 3D tissue constructs.
