This PhD project has the aim to better understand permafrost thaw processes of palsa mires through detailed study of a palsa mire in northern Sweden called Vissátvuopmi. It is a multi-disciplinary project that will combine remote sensing, climate data analysis, ice microstructure analysis, and greenhouse gas flux measurements with the aim to gain deeper understanding of palsa dynamics and their relationship to environmental factors and climatic drivers. To investigate these relationships, the PhD candidate will use drones equipped with LiDAR and other sensors to map the palsas’ exterior; the palsas’ interior will be investigated using ice microstructure analysis and ground penetrating radar; climatic drivers and environmental influences affecting palsa mires will be analysed together with data on palsa change; and greenhouse gas fluxes will be measured and related to the palsa mire environment.

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The proposed PhD project will be a continuation of the research on the molecular mechanismsof metabolic disease carried out by the research team of Prof. Margit Mahlapuu. We found that STE20-type kinases associate with intrahepatocellular lipid droplets and demonstrated that antagonism of these kinases hinders the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and associated comorbidities. The aim of this PhD student project is further characterize the role of STE20 kinases in regulation of intrahepatocellular fat accumulation and associated lipotoxic damage.

4. Doctoral student in Medical Science – Clinical brain tumor research

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Brain tumors often grow at slow to subacute speed, in contrast to acute conditions such as stroke, and in the process induce plasticity. A lesion-based study of brain tumors, linked with rich clinical data (e.g. neuropsychology), will allow deeper understanding of brain functions and identify regions where plasticity more easily occurs. Tumor segmentations using an atlas approach with rich clinical data is the foundation of lesion-based studies. Tumor segmentations are also the fundament for studies within the field of radiomics. Such methods have discovered novel features and patterns in patients with glioma. Finally, using segmentations and core clinical data we want to include all relevant data in a single report, as a cognitive support tool. 5. Doctoral student in Medical Science – Tissue resident memory B cells

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The doctoral project will investigate origin, specificity, formation and protective role of mucosal resident memory cells after infection. Viral respiratory infections caused by influenza-, orthopneumo- or corona-virus are major concerns worldwide. Influenza A virus (IAV) is a highly prevalent respiratory virus that causes significant morbidity and mortality in humans. Recently, few studies identified lung memory B cells (Bmem) as critical in preventing IAV reinfection. These tissue resident Bmem appear to have a broader specificity compared to splenic Bmem. Finally, our recent study demonstrated an incredible heterogeneity in Bmem, contrary to the focused serum Ab response we reported previously, yet Bmem epitope-specificity has not been elucidated. A better appreciation of tissue resident Bmem after infection and vaccination is crucial first step in developing mucosal vaccines against respiratory viruses.

Anne Farewell’s group uses molecular genetics and high-throughput screening to study how bacterial cells respond to stress and more recently has focused on the mechanisms of the spread of antibiotic resistance between bacteria. In this project the role of pesticides as drivers of ABR evolution and transmission to human pathogens will be examined. Despite the widespread use of pesticides (a broad group of agents which act against insects, weeds, bacteria and other pathogens), the role of these agents in promoting antibiotic resistance (ABR) is largely unknown. This project will examine the effect of pesticides on ABR development through linkage or cross-resistance (e.g., shared efflux mechanisms) and their role as drivers of ABR spread between bacteria through promoting conjugation. We will suggest interventions in the form of changes to how pesticides and fertilizers (organic and inorganic) are used in agricultural practices to minimize this risk and promote sustainable farming.

7. Doctoral student in Medical Science – Immunity to influenza Neuraminidase

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The doctoral project will investigate immunogenicity and antigenicity of influenza neuraminidase. Seasonal influenza virus infection still causes significant morbidity and mortality. Influenza also presents the danger of a 1918-like pandemic, with millions of deaths, due to the introduction of a novel antigenic virus from the animal reservoirs. Virions present three surface proteins: hemagglutinin (HA), Neuraminidase (NA) and the ion channel M2e, with the first two being the main targets of neutralizing Abs. While HA-specific immune responses have been studied reasonably well, NA-immunity remains poorly understood. In this project we have two main aims: 1) Determine B cell and Antibody targets on Neuraminidase and 2) Harness nanobodies for antiviral therapy. The results from this doctoral project will provide important information for the deisgn of novel influenza vaccines and therapeutics.

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Mitochondria convert chemical energy into ATP by utilizing a system of molecular machines, the respiratory chain complexes. The complexes driving oxidative phosphorylation are a mosaic of proteins encoded by the nuclear and the mitochondrial DNA. Therefore, assembly of the respiratory chain and the ATPase requires not only expression and import of many nuclear encoded proteins but also translation of mitochondrially encoded proteins. The mitochondrial genetic system is responsible for replication and transcription of the mitochondrial genome and for the synthesis of a few polypeptides within the organelle. Dysfunction of these processes underlies many human disorders and aging. It is therefore surprising that so little is known about mitochondrial protein synthesis. The main goal of this project is to unravel how protein synthesis by mitochondrial ribosomes is connected to quality control and proteolysis. Specifically, we will identify how auxiliary factors interact with the mitochondrial ribosome to mediate co-translational protein quality control.

The project will study the innovation processes leading to new technologies and related businesses, which address sustainability challenges such as SDGs. The purpose of the project is to analyze knowledge-intensive innovation processes involving new technologies in businesses – and these processes may include universities, entrepreneurship and large companies – in Nordic countries which promote sustainability goals. An example of such technologies is carbon capture. The project addresses how universities through prior students impact innovation and entrepreneurship in business. The purpose of this project is to analyze the impacts of university students, with a particular foci upon the flow and career paths of alumni. Alumni are students who have received advanced university degrees. One of the included sub-projects compares and contrasts different groups of alumni. One group has advanced university degrees from engineering/ natural science and the second group with degrees from innovation/ entrepreneurship. Summary of Doctoral Project:

Individuals with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia have an increased risk of developing metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus related to e.g., lifestyle factors and side effects from medications. Still, research suggest that they do not receive the same quality of physical health care compared to other patient groups. There have been national initiatives to promote the physical health for persons with psychotic disorders to reduce health care inequalities, but health promotion focusing on physical diseases has not been properly established within Swedish psychiatric care. More knowledge is therefore needed regarding patients and staffs’ experiences of health promotion activities. Also, evaluation using nationally representative data focusing on diabetes related health and care outcomes in people with psychotic disorders is needed.
