4. Postdoctoral Research Associate

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Multimorbidity, or the presence of two or more non-communicable chronic diseases in an individual, may be one of the greatest challenges facing health care. The prevalence of multimorbidity is high, with 30% of Canadians 40 years of age or older having multimorbidity and the burden of multimorbidity increases significantly with age and social vulnerability. Multimorbidity is too often viewed through a biomedical lens; when in truth, many chronic conditions such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes and obesity have strong social determinants. Personalized approaches that consider the complex interaction between clinical and situational factors in multimorbidity hold considerable promise in addressing the challenge of multimorbidity. Shared decision-making (SDM) is a method through which patients and clinicians can work together to develop personalized solutions in the face of medical complexity. While SDM is strongly recommended for patients with medical complexity due to multimorbidity, it is under-utilized and sub-optimally supported, particularly in racialized patients.

8. Postdoctoral Research Associate

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The available position is part of the multidisciplinary research program in the Tarailo-Graovac group which combines Caenorhabditis elegans genomics, bioinformatics and traditional molecular genetics approaches to understand which variation in a DNA manifests as a disease/lethality, and genome context (ie. genetic modifiers) that render essential genes non-essential. We utilize C. elegans model organism and its strains isolated across the Globe, whole genome sequencing, transcriptome sequencing and CRISPR/Cas9 knock-out and knock-in methods to better understand the plasticity of essentiality. We are looking for a creative and highly motivated research scholar with strong interest in deciphering complex genetic interaction networks and genetic modifiers of essential genes in different genetic backgrounds. The ideal candidate will have expertise in C. elegans molecular techniques, interest in genetic modifier networks, and passion for translational genomics.

10. Postdoctoral Research Fellow Positions

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We have a position for postdoctoral training in public health, KT and radon gas exposure. The postdoctoral scholar will examine the unintended consequences of COVID-19-related public health measures on Canadians’ exposure to carcinogenic radon gas. This post-doctoral scholar position would be under the co-supervision and mentorship of Dr. Cheryl Peters, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Oncology and Senior Scientist for Cancer Prevention at the BCCDC/BC Cancer, and Dr. Aaron Goodarzi, Associate Professor in Oncology and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Both Dr. Peters and Goodarzi are members of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, and the scholar would work alongside the study teams leading CAREX Canada and Evict Radon (details below). The hypothesis of our CIHR-funded study is that lung injuries from COVID-19 pneumonia will, as is the case for comparably less damaging typical pneumonia(s), increase lung cancer risk in people who do not smoke and make them more susceptible to the negative effects of radon exposure. As radon exposures are also rising, this produces the highly undesirable scenario of heightened lung cancer susceptibility with greater causative exposure, all as a wider health consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation will disproportionately impact those who are experiencing disability – already a marginalized group – even more.

11. Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Our lab is specialized in bovine bacterial diseases. We are studying Paratuberculosis (Johne’s disease), bovine mastitis, and digital dermatitis. We are looking for a creative, motivated postdoc to conduct independent research by employing RNA-seq, single cell transcriptomics, Tn-seq and bacterial comparative genomics. The postdoc will collaborate with other members of the lab and be part of a vibrant lab with access to all state-of-the-art equipment necessary for the project. Johne’s disease is a chronic intestinal infectious disease causing huge economic impact on the dairy industry. Current control measures are held up by low sensitivity and low specificity of available diagnostic tests and failure of existing vaccines to prevent infection. Available vaccines do not provide enough protection to the host, nor do they prevent the spread of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), the causative agent. It is known that MAP subverts the host immune system by using macrophages as its primary reservoir. But the mechanisms how MAP vaccines can provide protection against natural infections are not yet fully understood. We are using state-of-the-art methodologies, including RNA-seq transcriptomics, to study the effect of infection with WT and vaccine strains on gene expression related to inflammatory processes and tolerance. We are also interested Single Cell Transcriptomics applied to cells isolated from intestinal tissue to help us characterize the genes involved in JD pathogenesis and protection pathways.
