1. Postdoctoral Job

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

For an ambitious internally funded project, we are looking for a Postdoctoral researcher with a back-ground in slurry electrodes, electrochemical flow cell design, and characterization. The project target is to develop an efficient electrochemical cell to adsorb CO2 of different concentrations upon reduction and to release the latter upon oxidation, also called electrochemical-swing adsorption (ESA). Leveraging our core competencies in nanoparticle-based colloidal systems, coupled with our expertise in synthesizing pi-conjugated redox active molecules, we aim at significantly enhancing CO2 adsorption in a novel continuous-flow ESA system. We are in search of a dedicated and inventive mindset to address the diverse project objectives, which include the engineering of electrochemical flow cells and the evaluation of their effectiveness in terms of ESA performance.

2. Postdoctoral Job

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We are seeking an outstanding candidate with a strong background in the treatment of cellulosic porous media to take up a challenging PostDoc position in wood technology and materials chemistry. Within the DoubleSinkWood project, we intend to increase the durability of wood by more sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches compared to common impregnation with biocides. Instead, the wood structure should be impregnated with carbon from industrial processes to further enhance the carbon storage capacity of the durable wood product compared to native wood.

3. Postdoctoral Job

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Postdoc research will focus on fundamental studies to understand the behaviour of nanoparticles in a biological environment. This includes experiments using laboratory and synchrotron infrastructures for in-situ and operando investigations. The mechanism of interactions of (mostly) inorganic materials with biomolecules will be studied in depth with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) as the main methodology, complemented by microscopy and dynamic light scattering, among other methods. The aim is to develop a fundamental understanding of the leading interactions between nanoparticles and biology, enabling the design of high-efficiency strategies for targeted applications.

5. Postdoctoral Job

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The position is within the project ESCoDAC – Efficient Structured Contactors for Direct Air Capture. ESCoDAC intends to develop concepts for a novel mass-producible structured sorption contactor for Direct Air Capture (DAC) with an operation and regeneration process tailored to the sorbent. We aim at increasing the efficiency and yield of the DAC process by engineering the materials and processes in a multiscale approach (local flow and diffusion conditions during ad- and desorption, advanced desorption strategies and process scheduling).

6. Postdoctoral Job

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

In a joint project with a young and dynamic industrial partner from the Medtech field, we will develop a production process suitable for the large-scale manufacturing of ceramic-based micro-medical devices. The formulation and stability of the starting suspension, the micro-shaping process (including tools and chemistry) and finally reliable batch handling for sintering/consolidation will be key aspects to optimize. Successful project execution will particularly rely on the candidate’s deep understanding of dispersion/colloid-based processes and related organic/inorganic chemistry. Close coordination and cooperation with internal and external project partners and a sound degree of responsibility will be additional key merits.

7. Postdoctoral Job

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Stabilizing our climate requires to phase out fossil fuels and clean up the atmosphere from excess CO2. While many research projects, policies and economic initiatives are focusing on achieving net zero, we also need to pay attention on how to clean up our atmosphere after the energy transition is completed. Acknowledging this fact, Empa has launched the initiative “Mining the Atmosphere” with the goal to explore options for removing atmospheric CO2 and converting it into useful and valuable materials.

8. Postdoctoral Job

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Laboratory for Mechanics of Materials and Nanostructures explores novel thin film depostion strategies for interface engineering and probes the mechanical properties of small scale structures and interfaces. We are looking for a postdoc motivated to contribute to the development of programmable metal-polymer interfaces and explore different possibilities for changing adhesion in response to external triggers. As part of an internal collaboration, the researcher is responsible for the fabrication and characterization of model interfaces with incorporated trigger mechanisms, followed by quantitative adhesion analysis to validate trigger efficiency. Upon mutual interest the responsibilities will be extended to adhesion measurements in-situ during trigger exposure, the exploration of alternative trigger mechanisms and application cases.
