9. Postdoctoral Scholar- Biology of Aging – Department of Nutritional Science and Toxicology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks Postdoctoral Scholars to join an interdisciplinary research team study and to work under the supervision of Professor Danica Chen, in the area of biology of aging. One of the most fundamental questions in biology is how we age. The past decades have witnessed a significant revision of a traditional view that aging is simply a random and passive process that is solely driven by entropy. In fact, the aging process is regulated genetically and lifespan can be extended by single gene mutations. Our research aims to understand molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate the aging process and explore therapeutic targets to slow aging and even reverse aging-associated degeneration.

15. Postdoctoral Scholar – Robotic Position/Force Control – Department of EECS

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The overall goal of this NIH-funded project is to enable high-precision brain stimulation through robotic positioning of a Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) coil. The robotically actuated system and rapid MRI acquisition will allow adaptive search for the optimal brain stimulation site. The Biomimetic Millisystem Lab is seeking for a postdoctoral researcher interested in precision position/force control of a 6 degree of freedom MRI-compatible robotic system. The robot will be equipped with position, force and tactile sensors used for feedback control. Contact Sensing and Control Force sensing for the TMS coil positioning system is a necessary component. First, it is critical to measure contact forces for safety. Second, the alignment and degree of contact of the TMS coil with the head needs to be controlled using force control. During operation, positioning system actuator motion will be coordinated with force and tactile measurements to synthesize a virtual compliance for safe and repeatable contact. The final system must compensate for position errors, mechanism backlash, and reaction time. The robotic system will interact with people, hence safety considerations must be included in the design.
