2. Postdoctoral researcher on modeling electrochemical systems

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Decarbonization of our energy economy is paramount to combat climate change. Large scale energy storage must be deployed at a global scale to enable widespread integration of renewable energy technologies (e.g., solar and wind power) and secure grid stability. Redox flow batteries are a class of rechargeable electrochemical devices that are suited for storing megawatt-hours of electrical energy for multiple hours. However, current flow batteries are hampered by technical and economic challenges which motivates the exploration of new chemistries and reactor formats to enable transformative improvements. Specifically, engineering the electrode microstructure and surface properties is a powerful approach to enhance the performance, cost, and durability of the system. However, to date there is limited knowledge on how to deterministically design porous electrodes which results in a reduced choice of electrode materials, mostly limited to fibrous based substrates which fundamentally limit the performance of redox flow batteries.

3. Postdoc position on spectral sensing

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Our group has developed integrated spectral sensors, based on an advanced nanophotonic platform, able to quantify and classify materials properties using near-infrared light. These low-cost, handheld spectral sensors, already commercialized by our spin-off MantiSpectra, will enable a wide range of applications in the agro-food sector, for example to monitor the growth of plants, the ripeness and aging of fruit, the properties of milk, etc, throughout the entire food production chain (from farms to consumers). In this project we want to make a major further step, by showing that this technology can also be used to measure several points of an object (e.g. a plant), positioned at a certain distance from the sensor. This is essential in many situations (e.g. a greenhouse) where the sensor must operate autonomously and cannot be placed in direct contact with the sample.

5. Postdoctoral Research Fellow on Renewable Power to Heat System for Large-Scale Industrial Electrification

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Industrial heat makes up two-thirds of industrial energy demand and almost one-fifth of global energy consumption. As the majority of the industrial heat is generated by burning fossil fuel, it contributes to most of the direct industrial CO2 emitted each year. Therefore, it is essential to decarbonize the industrial process heating system to combat climate change. Despite many advantages of power-to-heat solutions, there are still significant barriers when scaling up the electrification of industrial process heating systems without the holistic design approach. Firstly, due to the risk aversion in the industry, a critical barrier to industrial electrification is the lack of confidence in the reliability of electrical process equipment as well as the other risks to redesign the manufacturing process lines. Secondly, scaling up the power to heat requires a radical change in the electrical energy system, including a significant expansion of renewable energy generation systems, strengthened transmission and distribution networks, and completely different end-use technologies for process heating, which results in high capital cost (CAPEX).

6. Postdoctoral Research Associate in development of an automated assessment and feedback system for education

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The high-level learning goal of the Machine Learning for Signal Processing (ML4SP) course is to educate students towards a fundamental understanding of the theoretical background of deep learning methods and demonstrate their similarities to many other, since long-established, signal processing methods. The course focuses specifically on those methods that embed strong priors in the associated neural network architecture to enable data and memory-efficient deep learning, characteristics that often prove vital in healthcare applications. When designing a deep learning method, a user typically makes many implicit assumptions. These assumptions to a large extent determine the success of the neural network. In the ML4SP course, these assumptions are made explicit, providing the students the means to better design their neural networks and to also enable them to design neural networks that combine physics- and data-driven models.

8. PostDoc on human-robot collaboration at work

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

In many organizations and across industries, robots are transforming the way we work. Robots are implemented to assist employees, to decrease workload, or to increase efficiency. As their capabilities continuously improve, collaboration between humans and robotic systems becomes more common and interdependent. Consequently, the role of the robots changes, and humans and robots now work closer together than ever. Workplace innovation advocates the joint optimization of the social and the technical system to yield optimal organizational outcomes. The EU-funded HORIZON Europe project Fluently aims at achieving true social collaboration between humans and robots while matching extremely dynamic manufacturing contexts. Robots will be equipped with a smart interface unit (called Fluently) through which they will be able to interpret the human operator’s current state, as well as speech content, speech tone and gestures.

9. 1 PhD and 1 postdoc on Electro-osmotic drying of diluted biomass streams

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

This project is part of a large Dutch academic-industrial research program entitled ELECTRIFIED. Its aims is to develop key enabling technologies and consists of multiple PhD and PD research projects. The main objective of this ELECTRIFIED research program is to develop and explore electrically driven dewatering technologies for the food and biobased industry. Drying alone represents almost 25% of all energy used in the processing industry. Sustainable food and biobased processing can only be realized by replacing our current evaporative dewatering processes by processes using more effective driving forces such as electricity. ELECTRIFIED uses such electric driving forces to extract water from biomaterials. This is done by making use of a combination of molecularly designed electroresponsive hydrogels, well-controlled electro-osmosis and electrohydrodynamic drying in diluted, semi solid and solid regimes.

11. Postdoc Position on Neuromorphic Computing with Oscillatory Neural Networks

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

In recent years, we have witnessed an explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) applications which will continue to grow over the next decade. An intelligent and digitized society will be ubiquitous, enabled by increased advances in nanoelectronics. Key drivers will be sensors interfacing with the physical world and taking appropriate action in a timely manner while operating with energy efficiency and flexibility to adapt. The vast majority of sensors receive analog inputs from the real world and generate analog signals to be processed. However, digitizing these signals not only creates enormous amount of raw data but also require a lot of memory and high-power consumption. As the number of sensor-based IoTs grows, bandwidth limitations make it difficult to send everything back to a cloud rapidly enough for real-time processing and decision-making, especially for delay-sensitive applications such as driverless vehicles, robotics, or industrial manufacturing.

13. Postdoc positions on Seamless design of Smart Edge Processors

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

With the rise of deep learning (DL), our world braces for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in every edge device, creating an urgent need for Edge-AI processing hardware. Unlike existing solutions, this hardware needs to support high throughput, reliable, and secure AI processing at ultra-low power (ULP), combined with a very short time to market. With its strong position in edge solutions and open processing platforms, the EU is ideally positioned to become the leader in this edge-AI market. However, certain roadblocks keep the EU from assuming this leadership role: Edge processors need to become 100x more energy efficient; Their complexity demands automated design with 10x design-time reduction; They must be secure and reliable to gain acceptance; Finally, they should be flexible and powerful to support the rapidly evolving DL domain.
