Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
This project will focus on oxygen with the Salish Sea and in particular, within the Puget Sound Region. The candidate will confirm the oxygen formulation within SalishSeaCast and evaluate the oxygen results against available Canadian and US observations. They will update the nutrient fluxes, particularly the nitrate flux, from the rivers and add those appropriate for the municipal outfalls. The next step of the project will be to investigate the main controls of oxygen in the system and compare to previous analyses, including those for nitrate and carbon. Sensitivity to the parameters/parameterizations of the major controls will be estimated. The applied component of the project will include nutrient manipulations from rivers and municipal outfalls to determine the impact of these loadings on the system. In collaboration with the larger group at UBC, an investigation of the past and future oxygen cycling will be possible. Additional responsibilities will include: reporting to the funding agency, publication of the main results in peer-reviewed international journals and partial supervision of under-graduate students working on this project and mentoring graduate students working other aspects of SalishSeaCast.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Ecosystem Restoration (ER) is important to reverse biodiversity loss and is a critical element of nature-based solutions (NBS) for climate change mitigation and adaptation, food security, and disaster risk reduction. ER investments must be data-driven, requiring historical information on ecosystem disturbance and degradation, to enable planning of interventions, which are then monitored for their impact. This 20-month MITACS funded PDF position will conduct applied research in the application of remote sensing data to support ER. The postdoc will work closely with industry partner Hatfield Consultants (Vancouver) and international partners in Europe. The post doctoral fellow will participate in the development and evaluation of remote sensing approaches to assess ER at demonstration sites in Canada and internationally. The successful applicant will develop and apply algorithms targeting remote sensed essential biodiversity variables (RS-EBV) products applicable to forest and wetland biomes. The project will assess how RS-EBVs can be used to assess recovery following a disturbance, including natural or active ER processes. Challenges include how to differentiate recovery signals from other dynamic processes (e.g., meteorological conditions, seasonal conditions, climate long-term variability, human actions).

Granzymes are a family of serine proteases with 5 members identified in humans. With the exception of Granzyme A and Granzyme B, very little is known about the other 3 proteases, providing many opportunities to carve out a niche for drug development, patents, and publications. Our research program spans basic molecular biology and biochemistry through to target validation, proof-of-concept in animal and human models, and collaborations with clinicians and industry. Dr. Granville’s laboratory has expertise in established mouse models of skin diseases related to pruritus, aging, inflammation, tissue injury, and wound healing. The Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) will be involved in translational research investigating the pathophysiological roles of granzymes in the context of pruritus and inflammation in aging skin and/or other dermatologic conditions. The position will provide opportunities to collaborate and work in other areas of wound healing and regenerative medicine with both industry and academic collaborators. The PDF will be responsible for conceiving, designing, and implementing studies to further elucidate mechanisms of disease through the use of in vitro and in vivo models. The position is highly translational and well-suited for PDFs seeking greater involvement in taking basic bench research discoveries through to clinical application and potentially commercialization. Applicants with well-rounded expertise in biochemistry, enzymology, proteomics and/or degradomics techniques are especially encouraged to apply.
