5. PhD Position in meteorite research: Potassium isotopes in iron meteorites

Summary of PhD Program:

The project aims to study whether or not the galactic cosmic ray particle flux in the solar system was constant over timescales of hundreds of million years. Large variations might influence Earth climate and are therefore very relevant. The objects to study are iron meteorites and we therefore recently installed a system for the extraction of potassium from iron meteorites. During sample melting, the very small amounts of potassium (pg – ng) are extracted and collected onto filaments using strong electric fields. Later, the filaments are transferred to a Thermal Ionization Spectrometer (TIMS) and the potassium isotope ratios are measured. We are currently the only laboratory word-wide able to perform such studies.

14. PhD Position in cell and structural biology

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a PhD candidate to work in the Kukulski group towards understanding the mechanisms of lipid transfer between organelles. The vast diversity of cellular lipids makes up membranes that surround organelles, delimit the cell, act as signaling molecules and provide numerous other cellular functions. Lipids are also major constituents of cell metabolism and important means of energy storage. The mechanisms of distributing lipids within the cell according to the organisms’ needs are therefore a key element of cell physiology. Towards revealing such mechanisms, his project will involve mammalian cell culture, biochemistry, live fluorescence microscopy, correlative microscopy, and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET).

15. PhD Position in structural and computational biology

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a talented young researcher to work on an interdisciplinary project involving cryo electron tomography (cryo-ET), deep learning, and protein modeling. In the past decade, cryo-ET has revolutionized the study of biological machinery, allowing the direct visualization of macromolecular assemblies in their near-native state, inside cells. Cryo-ET offers exciting new opportunities for structural studies in situ and allows obtaining insights into the organization and structure of protein complexes that are fragile, transient, or form non-discrete assemblies. However, the computational tools to identify and characterize such structures in cryo-ET data sets have only started emerging.

18. PhD Position in Organs-on-Chip

Summary of PhD Program:

The Organs-on-Chip Technologies (OOC) Lab at the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research of the University of Bern focuses on the development of advanced in-vitro models (organs-on-chip) by combining engineering, microfluidics, microtechnologies and cell biology. We currently have an open position for a PhD Student in Organs-on-Chip development of a pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)-on-chip model. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare cardiopulmonary disease with a poor prognosis and few therapeutic options. Current PAH drugs can slow down, but not reverse disease progression, which is driven by chronic vascular remodeling. The aim of this PhD project is to develop a PAH-on-chip model able to mimic the vascular remodeling dynamics and the underlying multicellular crosstalk to address fundamental questions regarding the mechanisms that drive lung vascular remodeling in PAH.
