5. PhD Program
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The omnipresence of sensors causes an explosive growth of data that offers the potential for a revolutionary transformation in the health care sector. As biomedical monitoring devices are becoming more widespread, continuous measurements of critical biomarkers can be collected for the purpose of screening, medical diagnosis and prediction of disease progression. The availability of this time series data makes it possible to develop new systems, such as wearables, that can extract insights from data and transform them into actionable knowledge. Furthermore, hybrid AI will be considered to bridge the gap between purely data-driven machine learning models (such as artificial neural networks, or deep learning models) and physics-based mechanistic models that describe complex underlying disease processes. Possible examples of illnesses that will be considered in the PhD project are either respiratory related (such as COPD, sleep apnea, asthma,…) and/or heart conditions (such as heart failure, atrial fibrillation,…).

6. PhD Program
Summary of Doctoral Project:
We are looking for a starting scientist that is interested in preparing and submitting a Baekeland mandate application on a topic related to dietary additives in animals to reduce inflammatory responses in the gut. Baekeland mandates support basic research that – if successful – have clear economic objectives and offers added value to the company involved in the project. The joint University-industry research project is directed towards obtaining a doctorate (PhD) diploma. In the project we aim to evaluate novel dietary additives on intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP) activity in the intestinal tract. IAP has been shown to detoxify LPS on the mucosal surface, and thus consequently reduce epithelial barrier defects associated with LPS-induced inflammation. In addition, the project will focus on anti-oxidant activities of these dietary additives, as oxidative stress has been associated with inflammation, unfavourable microbiota shifts towards mucosal expansion of Gram-negative Enterobacteriaceae that thus contain LPS and consequently can cause health problems.

Summary of Doctoral Project:
The PhD candidate will be investigating ethno-racial inequalities in (access to) health(care) using quantitative data. A growing line of interdisciplinary research has documented the various forms of inequalities that ethnicized and racialized minorities experience in their access to and quality of healthcare, and therefore in their health outcomes. Differences in socio-economic and linguistic resources, cultural and religious stereotypes, access to social capital and discrimination are some of the mechanisms underlying the observed health disparities. Less studied are the spatial mechanisms, such as residential segregation, that may also contribute to the (re)production of these inequalities along ethnic and racial lines. This project aims to fill this gap by examining ethno-racial disparities in access to healthcare and health outcomes in Belgium and France and focusing on uncovering the spatial mechanisms partly responsible for these inequities. It will do so by using a mix of administrative and survey data that will be analyzed by means of (advanced) statistical methods.

Summary of Doctoral Project:
The research project starts from the idea that communication messages and nudging techniques in a supermarket context (e.g. placing a sustainable product on eye-level) can increase choices of sustainable products. However, these one-time choices do not always lead to subsequent sustainable choices. In this project, we investigate how, when and why behavioral interventions in a store context translate into subsequent sustainable choices (=spillover behavior). In this project, quantitative, online, lab and field studies will be set up to answer the specific research questions. This four-year project will be realized under the supervision of Prof. dr. Iris Vermeir and Prof. dr. Adriaan Spruyt.

Summary of Doctoral Project:
Our research group currently is involved in research projects in the energy domain, including mostly smart grid applications. The focus of our AI4E team in these projects is on data analytics, as well as coordination algorithms for, e.g., demand response. A major objective of the applications we want to support is to accommodate large penetration of renewable sources (wind mills, solar panels, etc.) without requiring excessive investments in the power grid infrastructure. This involves characterizing and eventually predicting both power generation (from renewables) and consumption behavior (and its flexibility, e.g., what portion thereof can be shifted in time), using data analytics techniques, constructing generative models, applying machine learning, etc. The next step is to actively control power consumption, e.g., by developing algorithms for energy management systems (to steer power consumption and/or decide what to use local production for, e.g., push into the grid or local storage).

15. PhD Program
Summary of Doctoral Project:
The European Green Deal aims at zero net greenhouse gasses emissions by 2050. The steel and chemical industries are responsible for a significant fraction of these emissions. Mechanical and chemical recycling of end-of-life waste streams is an important feature in reducing these emissions. While end-of-life steel can easily be recycled, this is not generally true for end-of-life plastics and other wastes. The project aims to reduce emissions by increasing the recycling of unrecyclable waste streams, thereby tackling multiple problems at once. This project investigates whether the waste fraction that cannot be recycled yet, can be used for both its energetic and its reductive potential as alternative reductant in a blast furnace. This would substitute for part of the cokes in a blast furnace, hereby decreasing the CO2 emissions. In the project, two routes for the production of alternative reductants will be investigated: the cokemaking route and the torrefaction route.

17. PhD Program
Summary of Doctoral Project:
This project proposes a historical and systematic study of German and French intellectual projects between 1870 and 1940 labelled ‘Philosophy of Life,’ ‘Biological Philosophy,’ and ‘Philosophical Anthropology.’ The core hypothesis is that they share an alternative conception of philosophy, called here heterodox naturalism, which (1) resists reductive naturalisms as well as idealist and analytical approaches, and (2) seeks to articulate an expansive notion of ‘life’ not restricted to that provided by the natural sciences. The project will clarify how these non-reductive conceptions of life aimed at rethinking the specificity of human beings as living entities, and were driven to articulate an alternative approach of knowledge by the institutional settings of the time. Three dimensions are focused upon: 1) their alternative conception of philosophy, requiring a meta-philosophical analysis of the positions at stake; 2) their conceptions of life, as well as their conceptions of human uniqueness to which these lead, requiring conceptual and terminological analyses; and 3) the sociological and institutional factors to which they responded, requiring a sociologically-driven analysis. The project draws upon the results of an ongoing FWO-project on “Vitalism – A Counter-History of Biology”, and purports to project, as did the latter one, its results to our current era, with attention for the place of the humanities in an academic institution mainly driven by naturalistic concerns.

Summary of Doctoral Project:
We are heading towards a hybrid society, where AI-enabled agents cooperate with humans in a variety of tasks. Human decision making is however notably prone to cognitive biases. In applications supporting the human, the integrated AI should account for these biases when making suggestions or taking actions. Within the context of a prestigious European FET-OPEN collaborative project (ChronoPilot), the Phd study recruited for this position will design a computational model that generates multi-modal (audio, video, haptic) stimuli via XR technology to resolve the differences in individual time perception during group tasks. The perception of time is a critical component of a large range of human activities. In particular, when individuals have to make decisions and consider the outcomes associated with their choices. Nevertheless, humans perceive durations mostly subjectively. Sometimes time flies, whereas at other moments, time feels expanded, depending on the individual’s environment, the task at hand, the allocation of the individual’s attention, etc. This subjective judgment of durations influences the optimality of human decisions, well-being, performance, etc. While the focus of this position is on the computational modelling using AI techniques, the researcher will closely collaborate with researchers from other disciplines.

Summary of Doctoral Project:
The research group Materials Science and Technology-DyMaLab is looking for a highly motivated PhD student to contribute to a European research project on advanced high strength steels for the automotive industry. The project aims at an enhanced understanding of the microstructural factors contributing to the energy absorption capacity of steels used in car components designed to protect car occupants in case of a crash. More specifically, advanced high strength steels which rely on the transformation of austenite to martensite during plastic deformation, also called transformation induced plasticity or TRIP effect, will be studied. Indeed, many studies have shown that the TRIP effect is a key element to obtain the superior properties needed for the newest generation of advanced high strength steels. Therefore, the TRIP effect has been extensively studied in recent years. However, knowledge is still missing on the austenite to martensite transformation under impact-dynamic, multiaxial loading conditions.
