1. 1-2 PhD students in Computing Science with focus on cloud native computing systems

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The research, led by Professor Erik Elmroth, focuses on autonomous systems for managing resources and applications in environments based on cloud native technology (possibly serverless technology), i.e., the software landscape built around Kubernetes run by CNCF. The specific problem can to a large extent be adapted to the candidate’s background and interest, with the ambition of creating new knowledge about the design of autonomous management systems for future software systems designed specifically for execution in clouds. General objectives for autonomous management systems are typically to achieve high reliability, availability, performance, and efficiency with moderate manual effort.

2. PhD-student position in Medical Sciences with a research profile in diagnostic radiology

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Cognitive decline compromises health for a great number of older adults. There is therefore a great need for more knowledge of the brain changes that underlie cognitive decline in aging. This project will employ brain imaging technique to assess neuroinflammation, cerebrovascular dysfunction, and the dopamine system, in relation to cognitive performance in healthy, older adults. The student will be part of data collection, handle and integrate large amounts of data from brain imaging, cognitive tests, questionnaires and blood-samples; and perform statistical analyses.

3. PhD student position in chemistry with a focus in biochemistry

Summary of Doctoral Project:

In your PhD studies, you will use proteomics approaches to map metabolic pathways in the most common species of the human gut microbiome, i.e., which proteins are expressed and used to metabolize different nutrients. You will then connect the identified pathways with species interactions (e.g., commensalism, mutualism, or parasitism) to predict how microbial communities are established and maintained. This will provide the first hints for how gut microbial communities can be rationally manipulated, either by dietary interventions or by colonization with specific species, to allow species imbalances caused by disease to be reverted.

4. Ph.D. position in Political Science focusing on Peace- and Conflict studies and women’s organizations as peacebuilders in illiberal post-war states

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The doctoral student will be part of the project “Between liberal norms and authoritarian governance: women’s organizations as peacebuilders in illiberal post-war states” which is part of the Swedish Research Council’s research program on civil society. The project explores how women’s organizations in post-war states in Asia are negotiating their position between international peacebuilding agendas, which position them as key partners, and authoritarian state governance which constrain their agency. Given the important role that women’s organizations are often expected to play in creating a just and sustainable peace, it is important to better understand how their role as peacebuilders is conditioned by the combined impact of international peacebuilding norms and practices, and domestic authoritarian governance.

7. PhD student position in chemistry with a focus in biogeochemistry

Summary of Doctoral Project:

This research project fully supports a PhD student to study mechanisms for formation of methylmercury in anaerobic microbial biofilms. This work will focus on experimental molecular level studies on mercury uptake and methylation in biofilms. The spread of mercury in ecosystems constitutes a severe threat to wildlife and human health. The problems are largely caused by formation of neurotoxic methylmercury which accumulates in aquatic food webs. Methylmercury is formed intracellular in a select group of anaerobe microorganisms by methylation of inorganic mercury. However, we still lack a detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms for cellular uptake and methylation of mercury.

8. Two PhD positions in Ecology or Physical Geography, with focus on stream-riparian interactions in boreal landscapes

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The project aims to assess the influences of riparian vegetation structure on land-water interactions, stream ecosystem processes, and aquatic food webs in the northern Swedish landscape. Riparian buffer zones along small streams in northern Sweden are dominated by coniferous forests, yet new management recommendations call for efforts to prioritize broadleaf trees in these areas. This research will test what such a change could mean for the ability of buffer zones to retain nutrients at the land-water interface and to promote instream productivity, including resource acquisition of aquatic macroinvertebrate consumers. This project aims to advance basic knowledge related to land-water interactions in boreal landscapes but will also provide opportunities to engage stakeholders responsible for generating land-management plans in this region.

9. PhD student in Computing Science with focus on federated learning

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Federated learning (FL) poses multiple challenges when applied to distributed, real-time robotic manipulation in the cloud. Multi-centric data heterogeneity observed during sensing, actuation, control and manipulation is a prime concern because data in classical FL settings is typically assumed to be independent and identically distributed (iid). In contrast, data from distributed robotic nodes operating under variations in environment, kinematics and sensing modality is not necessarily iid and raises questions concerning global model convergence for performance guarantees.

11. PhD student in mathematical statistics within the WASP AI programme

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Machine learning, especially deep neural networks, has, during the early 21st century, had an immense impact on both research and society at large. This rapid development has made great progress possible and caused significant challenges. A subfield within machine learning is so-called geometric deep learning. This concept can mean many things, but at its core, the field is dealing with situations in which the in-data is of non-standard type. One can, for instance, consider 3D models, point clouds, or spherical images. To deal with such data poses special requirements on the network architectures.

12. WASP AI Program: PhD position in Mathematical Statistics or Computational Science

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The interplay between optimization and machine learning is the cornerstone of many important advances in inference systems and artificial intelligence in the last decade. The vast majority of machine learning applications are modeled and solved as an optimization problem. To accommodate the increasing complexity of problem models along with massive amounts of data, machine learning entails the development of new optimization methods. In contrast to the traditional black-box optimization framework, an end-to-end view of modeling and optimization is central to these novel algorithms.

13. PhD student position in organic/medicinal chemistry

Summary of Doctoral Project:

We are offering a PhD student position in a interdisciplinary project focused on development of new strategies to study G-quadruplex DNA and its potential as drug target. G-quadruplex DNA structures are prevalent secondary DNA structures that are implicated in fundamental cellular functions, some of which are directly correlated to human diseases such as cancer (e.g. regulation of oncogene expression). There are large gaps in the knowledge of the biological functions and regulation of G-quadruplex DNA and although they are highlighted as promising drug targets, their scope remains to be elucidated.

22. PhD position in ecology with focus on belowground plant responses to grazing and snow cover changes in boreal ecosystems

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The aim of this project is to study and quantify how reindeer grazing and changes in snow cover influence plant growth and decomposition patterns above- and belowground. Boreal ecosystems in Scandinavia are shaped by two important and interacting factors: reindeer grazing and a persistent and protective snow cover during the cold winters. Each of these influence the soil temperatures that plants experience, which is especially important in northern ecosystems where a large proportion of plant biomass and production is situated belowground. Roots also directly influence many important ecosystem processes, as they take up water and nutrients, and transport carbon into the soil. Thus, roots play a key role in controlling soil carbon stores and greenhouse gas emissions of northern soils, which contain about 50% of all global belowground carbon. This project will assess belowground plant growth in response to a changing winter climate and reindeer grazing, and its influences on greenhouse gas emissions. The project will further advance basic knowledge on seasonal root activity.
