2. PhD Studentship: Interrogating cellular metabolism using Raman spectroscopy

Summary of Doctoral Project:

The study of cancer metabolism has led to the identification of ‘oncometabolites’, which are a function of normal metabolism but when accumulated as a result of genetic mutations have pro-oncogenic functions. Several oncometabolites have been implicated in renal cell carcinoma, however, understanding of their spatiotemporal dynamics in cancer progression is limited due to our inability to visualise them non-invasively. Raman spectroscopy is a powerful bioanalytical technique that reveals the chemical constituents of a given sample enabling 3D localization of small molecules in living cells. As a result, we are now able to spatially resolve the chemical composition of cells without the need for dyes or stains, which allows us to probe the subcellular dynamics of oncometabolites for the first time.

3. PhD Studentship in Task-Based Parallelism

Summary of Doctoral Project:

Our research group has developed a number of approaches for increasing the performance of applications through parallelisation. Building on the success of the HELIX automatic parallelising compiler, our Selective Replay Vectorisation technique and our Janus binary paralleliser, we seek to develop architectures and compiler optimisations that can exploit fine-grained task-level parallelism for future microprocessors. We wish to identify opportunities for task-level parallelism, extracting parallelism when beneficial, and dealing with cross-task data dependences via speculation or synchronisation.
